With unresolved symbols, the solution to the problem often depends on what symbols are unresolved.

I wish I knew. I was hoping to wait until Christmas vacation to rebuild my system, but with my recent portage problems I've been having its starting to look like something I'll want to do this weekend...

Hmmmm, I went to see what all the fuss was about BUT when i tried to compile the new drivers it failed to _load_ into the kernel saying it had unresolved symbols !?!?! 8O

Consider I've been running X with nVidia since -r7 came out months ago and havent touched my .config. Does anyone know what's up?

The unresolved symbols are mtrr_end and mtrr_add ?? I think. And YES mtrr support is compiled in and i did a full make clean dep bzImage modules modules_install several time to try to fix the problem?? What gives?

Have you tried unmerging the old driver 1st, and then emerging the new one :?:

If so, try running depmod -a.

I have put off the upgrade for now (lots of work), when I'll have some spare time I'll report how it went.

Yup. depmod -a says unresolved symbols in module NVdriver. I think I'm going to try to make a brand new kernel and see what happens. Otherwise I'll submit a bug report...

I've updated today and it went smoothly (using gentoo-sources-r7). Here's what I did:

1. Logged out of X (stopping everything that runs on it as well, e.g: kdm, xdm or gdm).

2. Removed the existing module from memory: rmmod NVdriver.

3. removed the existing kernel and glx packages: emerege -C nvidia-kernel nvidia-glx.

4. emerge nvidia-kernel nvidia-glx

5. Make sure everything is ok by running: modprobe NVdriver.

6. To be on the safe side: opengl-update nvidia.

7. Start the X session (or display manager) again and enjoy it :-)

Got it working after compiling a new kernel...
