Hi everyone

I have a few question about setting up Gentoo on a Physical Hardware raid.

Im using a HP Proliant Server DL160 6G
Intel Xeon l5520 @2.27ghzfrequency 2.26GHz
BCLK Speed 133MHz
Cache L1 256 kb
Cache L2 1024 KB
Cache L3 8192 KB

SATA configuration controller mode is set to raid
other options
AHCI
Compatable
or
DIsabled

Primary IDE master not detected i dont have any ide drives inside the machine
Secound IDE Master not detected

I have nothing Setup inside the machine i guess there are two ide drive slots
This has already been a bit of an adventure trying to get things going.

I finally figured out how to get into the hidden raid array setup.
I have the the options of raid 0 and 1+0.

I have setup the array as 1 + 0.
(I understand whats going on here this is not the issue.)
I have noticed the drive sizes appear alot lower inside the bios than they are inside the gentoo cd when it picks up the drives.

I have tried to setup Gentoo as normal but am just stuck with a black ground on boot.

Do I need to setup the discs up a certain way inside of the live cd ?

Any special Kernel parameters ? Ive tried to compile in what i think was write and not working
Im not also sure how gentoo is reading the disks properly for the hard raid setup

this is my fdisk output

Im also slightly unsure with when USING UEFI or not for booting

Im currenlt always creating

sda1 /boot/efi
sad2 /boot
sda3 swap
sda4 /root
sda5 /home

When the system is not uefi i really dont no how to set out my partition lauyout when using the handbook .
Can anyone help point me in the right direction or give me some tips

Also any handy tips for safe flags in /etc/portage/make.conf

Ive added everything i thought was needed.

Im just really lost

THanks guys

Best i recall Nehalem Intel cpu's were not uefi boot capable? Clarifying this is very important because your motherboard bios may also not be capable of booting from a gpt partition label.

Code:
sda1 /boot/efi
sad2 /boot

if your hardware is incapable of booting from uefi sda1 partition formatted with vfat will be of no benefit. sda2 could also be entirely optional. the easiest legacy boot disk partition configuration I frequently used just had swap and the rootfs partitions on an msdos partition label.

I used this simple setup with a 1st gen intel nehelem i7-920 for many years. gpt partition label may have worked for an i7-920 with the gigabyte motherboard i had at the time but i dont recall accurately as that motherboard and cpu combo was sold to some very happy teenager via craiglist

Gentobobbyuk,

Code:
00:1f.2 RAID bus controller: Intel Corporation 82801JIR (ICH10R) SATA RAID Controller
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company 82801JIR (ICH10R) SATA RAID Controller

Its fakeraid. That is, its BIOS software raid. Don't use it as raid.

it is not a real harware raid you should use. If the gentoo installtion is the only thing you have on those disks yet, then please disable the reaid funktionality in the bios and start again with the installation. Also check the bios to disable the uefi boot boot

It is entirely possible since you have an enterprise server that the raid you are using is SAS based hardware raid and that hardware raid if you are using it would require a raid volume to be configured in the raid controller bios for the disks to become usable. typically these SAS hardware raid controllers are intel adaptec or LSI based chipsets.

My own server has a supermicro enterprise v2 xeon motherboard with both sata 2 and SAS raid controllers and the intel based disk controller chipset manages the sata ports.

If this is the similar situation using the SAS hardware raid is entirely acceptable however if your using a traditional sata controller chipset and the sata controller raid is motherboard based similar to a consumer based desktop pc motherboard where the sata controller raid configuration limitations provided are typically only capable of raid 1 or raid 10 that would highly likely be fakeraid which is generally unsupported or very disagreeable with linux.

As Neddy has mentioned based on the lspci results
Code:
Intel Corporation 82801JIR (ICH10R)
would be a fakeraid intel raid controller. ICH10R is not true hardware raid capable.

If you can change the sata controller mode to AHCI that would be preferred and should function with Linux. You can then choose any of the available Linux based software raid solutions such as mdraid, btrfs or zfs to manage data redundancy.

One common telltale symptom of fakeraid being active when hardware is booted from a linux livecd with ahci disabled is the disks will not appear as a single raid volume in parted or fdisk but instead independent disks however attempting to install linux using one of the independent disks will then later fail to boot.

Many people would rather expect to see with fakeraid and being unaware of the complications and consequences one single disk volume and not several independent disks. Windows installs will present one single raid disk volume however linux will never be desirable for use with fakeraid.

If your server is capable of booting in uefi mode booting from a zfs root setup is a great option.

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/User:Ali3nx/Installing_Gentoo_Linux_EFISTUB_On_ZFS

When using software raid with Linux just using an ahci configured sata controller or a SAS HBA disk controller such as an lsi 9305 is always preferred. software raid configured on top of a hardware raid volume will never be capable of maintaining data integrity due to the data caching hardware raid controllers generally enforce or provide.

Right i think i have understood slightly

Im now going to change my setting in the bios to not use raid but ahci

now ive been having so much trouble with grub and i just cant get my head round this

i can install gento 32 and 64 bit using MBR and grub that works fine
i can install gentoo 64 bit using efi gpt label

what i have not manged to do yet is when my mother board is not uefi how the hell to have my partitions.

Im currently using on all efi

/dev/sda1 /boot/efi vfat
/dev/sda2 /boot ext2
/dev/sda3 swap
/dev/sda4 /
/dev/sda5 /home

i then add grub platforms stuff to make.conf for x86-efi so on boots fine

mbr

i just use grub install and done

how on earth if its a none uefi do i create the same layout above.

i really cant understand from the hand book how to setup the parition layout

i simply want swap root home i dont get what boot partitions i need or what file systems are applied to the boot .

mbr is simple
gpt is simple uefi
none uefi not a clue
someone please help me with this part

Thanks for all the above information im starting to find it more and more easy to understand how people are explaining thank u so much but yes any help with the none uefi would be great

What on earth is the point of this silly fake raid inside the bios then

oK SO WHEN FOLLOWING THIS

/dev/sda1 BIOS boot partition
/dev/sda2 Boot partition
/dev/sda3 Swap partition
/dev/sda4 Root partition'

do you give the /dev/sda1 a filesystem this is where im confused .

what fs does sda1 need to be this is a none uefi setup this is can install gentoo to uefi with gpt but without uefi im stuck here.

The default partition configuration for gentoo provides both a partition for legacy boot (sda1) and uefi esp partition (sda2)

This configuration i always found to be confusing for users and your not the first or the last to also be confused by this as both of them are generally labelled as "boot partitions"

If you use uefi boot then you have no need to use sda1 and as a result sda1 will be no benefit to you at all.

Really the labels for the partitons should be something more clear or just create the partition and filesystem layout directly relevant to the configuration you intend to use.

/dev/sda1 legacy boot partition
/dev/sda2 uefi boot partition
/dev/sda3 Swap partition
/dev/sda4 Root partition

If you were only wanting to use uefi boot then do this...

/dev/sda1 uefi boot partition <- fat32 format
/dev/sda2 Swap partition <- swap format
/dev/sda3 Root partition <- whatever format for rootfs

I wrote a short guide about simplified uefi boot config concepts on this forum some time ago you may find useful.

If you want to do legacy boot use msdos partition label then try this

Code:
sda1 <-- swap
sda2 <-- rootfs

you don't need a separate partition for /boot or /root or /home

literally that simple :)

it should take you 1 hour to install gentoo if you use the gentoo-kernel-bin package. you can boot test that disk config or you can try using gpt with that simple partition layout and see if gpt will boot.

using gpt would be better if your server is capable of booting from gpt but until you test it there are no guarantees.

I do understand friend.

Using a gpt partition label doesn't always imply having to use uefi boot. Hardware devices being able to boot from gpt partition labels around the age of your server was not a guaranteed capability so boot testing was often necessary to determine if the motherboard was capable of booting from gpt partition label.

to install grub for legacy boot

Code:
grub-install /dev/sda

Legacy boot grub install differs from uefi boot because grub is not installed to the first sectors of a disk.

uefi boot grub install instead installs grub to a disk partition mount formatted with fat 32

Code:
grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi

the /boot partition for uefi boot must be fat 32 however for legacy boot ext4 is more desirable.

If you do create a /boot partition for legacy boot create /boot at least 100MB in size. 2MB is far too small to be useful.

one configuration you will need in make.conf to enable grub to use legacy boot

Code:
GRUB_PLATFORMS="pc"

I appricate ur help but ur not understanding bro

Look i have about 14 machines

I have about 10 that are uefi

They are all setup and working

I have 2 machiens that are using mbr

i have a current machine but it does not suppourt uefi

i simply dont no how to make the parittion layout

first of all lets forget root swap and home

i can sort this myself

NO UEFI NO MBR

I want to use a GPT LABEL

Have my root swap and home as usual

How do i setup the boot parition .

Do i create

/dev/sda1 and apply vfat or ext2 for boot i dont understand how grub uses the GPT stuff on uefi

The manual says mbr is becoming old and to use GPT
so i want to use GPT but no UEFI

and then how do i install grub to it .

im so confused

cant get my head over this bit for A gpt label based ssystem not uefi

/dev/sda2 would be swap swap
/dev/sda3 would be root xfs
/dev/sda4 would be home ext4

I am dyslexic bare with me

Right

Code:
Device         Start        End    Sectors  Size Type
/dev/sda1       2048       6143       4096    2M BIOS boot
/dev/sda2       6144     268287     262144  128M Linux filesystem i
/dev/sda3     268288   34871295   34603008 16.5G Linux filesystem
/dev/sda4   34871296  118757375   83886080   40G Linux filesystem
/dev/sda5  118757376 5860531119 5741773744  2.7T Linux filesystem

I have applied the file system ext4 to /dev/sda5
i have applied the file system xfs to /dev/sda4
swapon /dev/sda3
i have applied ext2 /dev/sda2

now what do i do with this bios boot it does not explain one bit in the manual if u do or dont apply a file system

Okay

Here is a simple example of disk partition config using parted for gpt + legacy boot

using the default partition scheme for reference

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:AMD64/Installation/Disks#Default_partitioning_scheme

sda1 needs the bios_grub boot flag and this example creates a 512MB size /boot partition. typically when i used legacy boot i would create 100 MB /boot however 512 MB will allow switching between legacy and uefi boot if that is ever desired by just changing the bios_grub flag to boot for uefi then formatting sda1 with mkfs.vfat.

gpt partition label

Code:
/dev/sda1 legacy boot partition
/dev/sda2 swap 2GB
/dev/sda3 rootfs

Code:
parted -a optimal /dev/sda
mklabel gpt
mkpart boot ext4 1 512
mkpart swap linux-swap 513 2561
mkpart rootfs ext4 2561 100%
set 1 bios_grub on

formatting disk partitions.

Code:
mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda1
mkswap /dev/sda2
mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda3

I understand and appricate ur help im reading the manual i no it off my head

your still not understading me ,

It tells me to create boot bios does boot bios need a file system if so what

It does not specify anywhere what u do with this boot bios partition #

it tells u if using uefi what to do but a not uefi using gpt label

it tells u to create the parition doesnt specify anywhere if u give it a file system or not .

I keep trying to explain

I have systems setup with MBR LABEL
I also have most of my system with GPT USING UEFI

I cant use GPT AND a none uefi

i dont get this boot part .

What file system do i give this boot bios /dev/sda1

sda i have given ext2

bios_boot partition should be ext2 or ext4. the size used for bios_boot partition in the handbook is far too small however. read my examples in the previous reply for parted commands to use.

Four partitions and two boot partitions are not necessary for either legacy or uefi boot. the handbook example is confusing you as it has many other people

if you use legacy boot the /boot partition must have bios_grub flag set by parted and should be ext4 formatted.

Dude maybe im thick maybe i really just dont get this but i dont have a clue what ur trying to explain

Right

I need to have this layout i have no UEFI on this motherboard
I dont want mbr

I want to use a GPT LABEL
My hard disk is 2.7 TB

I want to install grub 2 to this hard disk i want my standard layout root swap and home .

fprget about the paritions i no how to use mentioned above

what parition or paritions do i need to make
to get this working

boot /boot
rootfs /
home / home
swap #

I have currently made this layout as thats what the manual says.

Device Start End Sectors Size Type
/dev/sda1 2048 6143 4096 2M BIOS boot
/dev/sda2 6144 268287 262144 128M Linux filesystem
/dev/sda3 268288 34871295 34603008 16.5G Linux filesystem
/dev/sda4 34871296 118757375 83886080 40G Linux filesystem
/dev/sda5 118757376 5860531119 5741773744 2.7T Linux filesystem

I have made both /dev/sda1 and 2 ext2/

Why on earth can i figure out GPT with UEFI
Why on earth can i figure out MBR 32 and 64 bit

just cant get this gpt label using none uefi

seems like a simple question but its been going on for days.

Often observing a simple functional example can make adapting that simple functional example easier. I've provided a simple functional example that should work.

Now lets try the example that offers exactly what you need including separate partitions for / and /home.

It's not clear what the purpose of sda3 and sda4 are but the parted commands related to the desired disk partition configuration are below.

Two boot partitions are not required and the bios_grub is far too small in the handbook example.

Code:
gpt partition label
/dev/sda1 /boot partition for legacy boot 512 MB size
/dev/sda2 16.5GB for swap ??
/dev/sda3 40GB rootfs partition ??
/dev/sda4  all remaining disk space

Parted commands

Code:
parted -a optimal /dev/sda
mklabel gpt
mkpart boot ext4 1 512
mkpart swap linux-swap 513 16896
mkpart rootfs ext4 16896 57856
mkpart home ext4 57856 100%
set 1 bios_grub on

Formatting disks

Code:
mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda1
mkswap /dev/sda2
mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda3
mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda4

Mounting filesystems pre install

Code:
mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/gentoo
mkdir /mnt/gentoo/boot
mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/gentoo/boot
mkdir /mnt/gentoo/home
mount /dev/sda4 /mnt/gentoo/home
swapon /dev/sda2

right i have setup following the manual

Dude

the paritions ive created are what the manual tells me to create
im so f confused.

/dev/sda1 is the boot bios as the manual says to make .

the manual does not then tell u what file system to apply to this

/dev/sda2 is boot i have this set to ext2
/dev/sda3 is swap this mkswap swapon
/dev/sda4 is root xfs file system
/dev/sda5 is home ext4 file system
