Ctrl-Alt-F7 ??

Hi,

As I use linux since 2000 it used to be like that:

Code: Select all

Use the Ctrl-Alt-F1 shortcut keys to switch to the first console. To switch back to Desktop mode, use the Ctrl-Alt-F7 shortcut keys.
So when I started KDE from first console by startx , I could switch between text console Ctrl-Alt-F1, where I could see all the messages, and desktop Ctrl-Alt-F7.

Now, looks like Ctrl-Alt-F7 is missing now and desktop is in the console I started, so where are those text messages I got before from that console?

Mine show up on the console, at least just the opening

With the old vt7, messages would go to /var/log/Xorg*
with using vt1, etc the messages go to ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg*
UM780 xtx, 6.18 zen kernel, gcc 15, openrc, wayland
minixforum m1-s1 max -- same software as above but used for ai learning

So is there no "live" version now? So what in situation (eg. I had yesterday) KDE is frozen sudenly? Previously, I could switch back into console where I start KDE, could do Ctrl+C (stop the frozen process) and then start again. What should I do now?

I suggest you start by determining why the traditional semantics no longer apply. My guess would be that you are no longer following the traditional pattern of running getty processes on tty1-tty6, with Xorg on tty7. How do you start your graphical environment? What non-graphical processes are running right after you start?

The last part seems to point at that you do not run X11 as root ?

I don't know if this applies to Gentoo's systemd setup, but I know that Arch uses Ctl-Alt-F1 for the graphics session, and that's down to it's use of systemd. I use OpenRC, and it's still Ctl-Alt-F7 for me.

You could always go to an unused console F2-F6 and kill whatever from there, then go back to F1 and restart process.
