And it isn't possible to install media-gfx/gnome-font-viewer-3.16.2.

I think, once again, you did not read the bold caveat.

There is a bit too much overlap this time around so I decided not to move packages shared between GNOME 3.34 and 3.36 to the generic overlay since in all likelihood I'll move most back when GNOME 3.36 bridges the gap in a couple point releases. Therefore, until further notice, use of the dantrell-gnome-3-36 overlay also requires use of the dantrell-gnome-3-34 overlay.

Oh, yes that i haven't read this, sorry for this :-)

Interestingly startx with that config did _not_ work - I got the error below:

Quote:

The XKEYBOARDMAP compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
> Internal error: Could not resolve keysym XF86FullScreen
Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server
xinit: connection to the X server lost

The "not fatal" part sounds like this probably isn't related, but it definitely should have started gnome. The log file itself is interesting - I see that the X screen initialization failed on one GPU, but I'm running a multi-GPU setup and that _may_ be expected

The "not fatal" part sounds like this probably isn't related, but it definitely should have started gnome. The log file itself is interesting - I see that the X screen initialization failed on one GPU, but I'm running a multi-GPU setup and that _may_ be expected

At this point, I'm stumped. :?

If startx works with the defaults, it should (technically) work with everything else.

I guess you try bypassing startx and directly running GNOME Session:

Code:
gnome-session --disable-acceleration-check

and/or:

Code:
gnome-session --disable-acceleration-check --debug

But that'd be for diagnosing GNOME Session. It doesn't explain GDM.

You were previously running Gentoo's GNOME 3.32 without issue correct?

Correct on both counts - One thing I did miss was selecting nvidia's opengl with eselect - doing that leads to a fully blank screen (literally no output) once X, GDM or GNOME is started

That's correct, and no worries at all - this is 100% going to be due to some weird setup thing on my part and I really appreciate your helpfulness and responsiveness - you've been awesome.

I was on the Gentoo 3.32.2 build before, I'm wondering if I should switch to your 3.34 repo to rule out any 3.36 specific issues (I've seen a handful of people reporting similar things in 3.36 on arch and other distros while googling for these problems). I may give that a try and report back. If that works it might help narrow it down!

Nope! It's a desktop system - Threadripper CPU and 2080 Ti SLI GPUs with 3x monitors. The SLI GPUs regularly cause all sorts of weird driver issues though, and the monitors compound it because they lead to a fairly complex X setup. This is why I'm pretty sure this a problem with me and my system, rather than the overlay itself. I feel like every other GNOME version something like this happens. If I didn't need CUDA I'd 100% buy an AMD GPU and be done with this ridiculous situation!

At this point I'd suggest trying GNOME 3.34 as well since only one person other than me can confirm that GNOME 3.36 works.

If nothing else, it'd ensure that everything that should be rebuilt does get rebuilt.

Also, I'm 99.99% sure that if GNOME 3.34 doesn't work, it's not my fault.

Edit #1: Actually, something just occurred to me. Investigating...

Edit #2: So as of commit e8e9415 GNOME Session can optionally use the systemd user instance for session management.

Obviously, it's optional, but, if you recall net-wireless/bluez and sys-apps/dbus flip on support for something suspiciously similar and I can't be sure that it doesn't effect anything. Accounting for this right now, stay tuned...

Edit #3: Okay, sync up and rebuild GNOME Session:

Code:
USE="user-session" emerge --ask --oneshot --nodeps --verbose gnome-base/gnome-session

If that doesn't work you can try downgrading and/or playing with the user-session USE flag.

Awesome - thank you again for all your help here! I'm going to give that a shot, and if not I'll try Gnome 3.34 for debugging purposes!

Alrighty - report back :)

Bad news - still had the same issue on Gnome 3.36, even after that!

Good news - Gnome 3.34 works perfectly! I still had to make a few adjustments (Mainly enabling the 32 bit rust ABI which was mentioned in the readme, and allowing testing versions of x11-libs/gtk+) but it installed quickly and I'm up and running

My guess is something in 3.36 doesn't like my system config at them moment!

Nice, I wasn't worried at all.

I probably won't be able to guess the cause until more users are running GNOME 3.36 (but at least there's only a handful of packages it could be).

Hahaha - Glad this helped narrow things down, and no worries at all - I'm grateful to be able to run just 3.34 as it resolves the memory leak I was seeing on 3.32 - 3.36 was a nice to have but much less important!

Let me know if I can do anything to help narrow things down - happy to provide any logs need and/or give it another go if you want to test any fixes, my system can recompile the entire set in an hour or two so it's no bother at all to give things a try!

And thank you again for creating such awesome overlays, has really made my life much easier!
