vpn with l2tp client

Greetings,

I want to configure a vpn client with l2tp so I can connect to my workplace.
it can be done with nm+l2tp but as I don't use nm, I want to configure it using a different client.
is there any recommendation on which client to use? will libreswan do the job? if so, can anyone point me to a tutorial on the matter?

This question has cropped up before, and you're going to need to have l2tp software to connect vs a normal vpn.

Yeah, that's one of the l2tp software packages, openl2tp is another (though they seem to have shut their website down), there's an ebuild.
