xvid codec

Hi!

I'm wondering if there is an easy way to install xvid codec to Gentoo?
"emerge search xvid" found nothing and then I tried to add xvid to use variable and emerged xine-libs but it didn't want to install xvid.
Of course mplayer and libavcodec are great but I would like to encode movies with transcode using xvid.

First of all xvid development has been stopped due to GPL violations (check www.xvid.org). Anyway if you still want to use it, fetch the latest snapshot from their page, compile it & install, then emerge transcode - simplest thing to do.

ps. : There' s no xvid USE variable

I downloaded xvid source package from xvid.org and made changes to avifile's ebuild so it took xvid with it. Actually I just added this to src_compile function:

--with-xvid-prefix=$HOME/xvid_20020822/xvidcore/src/

Now transcode uses xvid codec very well

It's very sad that xvid isn't developed anymore since it was and still is a great and open codec.

I guess they'll continue the development since Sigma Designs said that they're gonna play along with GPL, but they still haven't released any source code. So just wait

actually Sigma design released the sourcecode for its 1.0 and 1.1 versions of the codec. But still they are accused to use the xvid codec without giving propper credits to the xvid authors. So they are still violating GPL and the issue isnt solved.. but im very confident, that this issue will be solved in near future, and xvid development will proceed.. and hope they release a stable b-frame build soon
