Everything is masked and I just want to go for it anyway.
I'm trying to install 'dev-java/sun-j2sdk-1.4.2' but it refuses to play.
I've read the Masked Packages FAQ and I must be having a real thickhead moment because I can't persuade it to emerge.
I've added a 'dev-java/sun-j2sdk-1.4.2' record to /etc/portage/package.unmask and typed ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~sparc" emerge ... and it still tells me to p!ss off.
Has anyone got Java2 working? Would you show me where I'm going wrong?
Thanks,
Iain. |

Try using dev-java/blackdown-jdk.
I've been using it successfully under sparc64 with the netbeans IDE.
You won't be able to use the Sun JDK because Sun does not provide binaries for sparc linux. That is why it is hard masked. |

Thanks, Dave.
Out of interest, why (d|w)on't Sun provide the binaries for Linux on sparc?

According to Sun. Solaris is the one and only true platform for Sparc. For that same reason a lot of BSD folks have trouble getting information from Sun about their hardware.
But it is not only Sun. Take the guys who make flash (macromedia?) for example. Flash is available for linux, but they think linux runs only on x86. So no binaries for linux on sparc, stupid closed sources. |

try this:http://ftp.linux.org.uk/pub/linux/java/JDK-1.4.1/sparc/01/
delete install script to END_OF_STUB. rename file to *.tar.bz2
It working well on kernel-2.6.5 U1E 170 Creator |
