Hello, to my surprise I found today that the latest "amd64" keyworded kernel in portage is sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-4.14.156, while the latest stable kernel of that line available from kernel.org is 4.14.164. This one is in portage also, but keyworded only as "~amd64", i.e. unstable. Sure I can enable it in package.accept_keywords, I am just curious why the rather long delay in accepting the kernel from kernel.org.

stable in Gentoo means something else entirely than stable upstream, it certainly does not mean 'acceptance' or lack thereof. You can safely ignore it while you stay on a particular major kernel version, if that branch works for your hardware, just add it to your package.keywords.

To add to previous reply, gentoo-sources are not equivalent to kernel from kernel.org, they include additional patches from Gentoo developers, thus need extra checks before stabilization.

vanilla-sources are equivalent to kernel.org. However, vanilla-sources are never declared stable in Gentoo, since they are outside Gentoo effort.
