Recently I needed to emerge mpage in at the last minute to print out an assignment. Unfortunately, I did not realize that the default page size for mpage was set to A4, and not US letter as I expected, which caused about five minutes of confusion as I tried to get it to print properly (time I really didn't have). This is something I didn't have to worry about with RedHat (though perhaps RedHat users in other countries may have had to fiddle with settings)

It's also a bit of a nuisance to have to readjust OpenOffice and other programs to get them working with the units and paper sizes I use. Is there some kind of system-wide configuration that says "Use A4 paper as the default when building stuff", etc?
