My laptop has 32GB of RAM and has an i7-7700HQ (8 threads) processor.

(1) I want to compile everything in RAM using tmpfs, what should I set the -J variable for MAKEOPTS ? and what should be the maximum size of the tmpfs ?

(2) I use the following: Xorg, alsa, qutebrowser, vim, qtile, and etc... is tmpfs enough for these apps ? or should I consider zRAM as well ?

(3) Should I install the firmware through portage or should I include the firmware in the kernel ?

Many thanks

LegionOfHell,

With 32GB RAM your tmpfs will be 16GB. At present, 9GB will be plenty for any single package.

You should install firmware through portage always. That's the first step in including it in the kernel.
When a kernel module that needs finmware is built into the kernel, its firmware must be included too.
This is because firmware loading is part of the module initialisation and for things in the kernel binary, happens before root is mounted.

The processor is a kaby lake so according to the wiki: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Intel#Installation

"Systems using Kaby Lake, Skylake or Broxton Intel graphics will need to install additional firmware[1] from sys-kernel/linux-firmware package:
emerge --ask sys-kernel/linux-firmware"

then it says: "Include the files required for the GPU in the kernel"

then at the bottom it says: "Including the firmware in-kernel may cause suspend-to-ram to fail, if this is a concern don't include the blob built into the kernel."

should i just install the firmware: emerge --ask sys-kernel/linux-firmware

and don't modify the kernel ?

You should install both: The Intel-mikrocode and the firmware for the GPU. I wrote this howto: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1065464.html
