Hi all.

I'm currently searching for an article I once saw (it might be from or have been linked from Stack Overflow or was it Slashdot, I don't remember exactly) from a (former, I believe) Microsoft developer who explains a few reasons why maintaining application compatibility on Windows is hard or something like that. The article mostly explains Microsoft developers are urged to integrate application-related patches into subsequent versions of Windows to keep buggy applications working. It was a very fascinating article from which discussions can emerge about who or where bugfixes shall go or bug fix policies...

Unfortunately I can't put my hands on the article as the silly me didn't think wise to bookmark it. Does that ring a bell to anyone?

Thanks a lot in advance if you happen to know what I mean and where to find the article.

Thanks a lot, Mrbassie but nope, wasn't that one, although *highly* enlightening too — bookmarked! I believe the one I'm talking about is fairly recent, I'd say no more than two years. And IIRC his blog also has his photo to the left of the article but don't take my word for it, I may be wrong.

What struck me is to read MS developers integrate inside Windows application-specific code paths, which make the system "behave" slightly differently when the application is executed. The reason behind this is those application developers may not be there anymore (for any reason) to fix them. As those apps used undocumented Windows features, Windows devs kinda "restored" such hidden features but exposed only to those specific applications when they ran, just to make sure they continue to run as before. Such applications included Adobe's, for instance, if I remember correctly.

Microsoft is being very upfront that Windows 10X isn't going to work with a lot of legacy applications. I'm hoping they kill this existing practice.

That sounds like The Old New Thing by Raymond Chen.

The Slashdot link is broken. It's a shame he didn't make his blog URLs backwards-compatible. :P

Wait! I've found what I was looking for: Joel Spolsky «How Microsoft lost the API war». The paragraph I was talking about is «The Two Forces at Microsoft»

Thanks for your hints guys, I'd never have found it without you 8)
