I've been trying to open my jpg files on my EOG but it keeps showing "Could not load image 'image001.JPG'. Unrecognized image file format", I've been looking everywhere but I can't find anything.
thanks in advance.

PD: I forgot to tell that I ran EOG on ubuntu and I had no problem. it isn't working just in my gentoo :(.
here's a little info about my system:

It is quite possible that the jpeg USE flag is not set, either globally or specifically for media-gfx/eog. Please post the output of both emerge --info and emerge -pv media-gfx/eog.

emerge -pv media-gfx/eog.

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies \
emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "media-gfx/eog.".

Given that X windows and a desktop manager are both installed switching to the amd64 desktop profile is probably the most suitable solution for the time being, it includes various USE flags which are more suited to a desktop environment.
Code:
ln -snf /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/amd64/2007.0/desktop /etc/make.profile

The period was just punctuation, it was not meant to be part of the command. Regardless, the other information you posted indicates that the jpeg USE flag is not set globally which indicates that is very likely the cause for this behavior, the desktop profile enables that flag by default. If your requirements preclude using the desktop profile flags can be set by including them in USE in /etc/make.conf or on a package specific basis in /etc/portage/package.use, man 5 portage and man 5 make.conf include the relevant information.

Try
Code:
ldd `which eog`

See if there's any libjpeg linked to it.

x jemrpo # ldd `which eog` | grep -i libjpeg
libjpeg.so.62 => /usr/lib/libjpeg.so.62 (0x00002b9d7f106000)

Sorry to continue this thread, but this error has been bugging me for days. On a fresh 17.0 x86 switched to gnome profile as well as 17.1 amd64 no jpg's were loaded by gtk, no eog, no thumbnails. The loader information in loaders.cache for jpeg and tiff were missing.

Code:
gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders > /usr/lib64/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/2.10.0/loaders.cache

solved the problem.
