|
|
I've been using vixie-cron forever but it looks like it's time to move on:
Code: | !!! The following installed packages are masked:
- sys-process/vixie-cron-4.1-r15::gentoo (masked by: package.mask)
/usr/portage/profiles/package.mask:
# Michał Górny <mgorny@gentoo.org> (2019-09-11)
# Unmaintained. Ancient. Carries a lot of patches, and has even more
# bugs reported. Last rites were cancelled due to Gentoo/FreeBSD 1 year
# ago but that project is dead nowadays. Many alternatives exist,
# sys-process/cronie is probably the closest one (it's a fork).
# Removal in 30 days. Bug #693946. |
I don't do anything fancy with cron and I'd like the replacement to just work if possible. Anything I should check on before removing vixie-cron and installing another one?
Is cronie the best choice? |

I switched to cronie and I like it.
Look at this thread for details. |

Just beware that the default installation of cronie also installs "anacron functionality." This can result in duplicate running of daily/weekly/monthly events shortly after install (but not chronically).
I didn't see that coming ... it annoyed me because I have some log files, mail folder rotation and similar that really aims to be limited to once a month. I'm pretty sure I'm a marginal case like that, so not going to complain.
The anacron functionality can be omitted with USE="-anacron" applied to sys-process/cronie |
