Hi, in my previous gentoo box, when i typed "emerge" and the beginning of some package name, let's say "emerge docker" and then press tab - it was showing me all available packages in tree, but when i do it now on my new machine, it doesn't work - any ideas? manually creating this directory doesn't help:

Code:
# emerge docker-su: cd: /var/db/repos/gentoo: No such file or directory
-su: cd: /var/db/repos/gentoo: No such file or directory
[/code]

I apologize if this is too obvious, but have you installed app-shells/bash-completion on your new machine?

Post your emerge --info please.
You have tree in /var/db/repos/gentoo or /usr/portage path?

Ah. Yes. Forgot. For Gentoo tools completions, install app-shells/gentoo-bashcomp.

For the other, "/var/db/repos/gentoo" is the new default location for the main Portage tree. Is your Portage tree stored in the old location ("/usr/portage")? Mine is. If so, I think you need
Code:
location = /usr/portage
in the [gentoo] section of the /etc/portage/repos.conf/gentoo.conf file.

As John R. Graham say, what you have configured in /etc/portage/repos.conf/gentoo.conf?

Well, there you go. Change "/var/db/repos/gentoo" to "/usr/portage".

Thanks for the [code] tags. ;)

What this probably means, by the way, is that (a) you have conflicting values in /etc/portage/make.conf vs. /etc/portage/repos.conf/gentoo.conf and (b) app-shells/gentoo-bashcomp handles the repository location override priority slightly differently as compared to Portage.

Yep! it helped - but it weird - shouldn't it be by default when first installing gentoo according to handbook? i didn't touch that file at all, only did this according to handbook:
Code:
cp /mnt/gentoo/usr/share/portage/config/repos.conf /mnt/gentoo/etc/portage/repos.conf/gentoo.conf

Do you have a PORTDIR variable in /etc/portage/make.conf? That's deprecated now.

Probably make.conf in stage3 have variable setted to old value
Code:
PORTDIR="/usr/portage"
DISTDIR="${PORTDIR}/distfiles"
PKGDIR="${PORTDIR}/packages"

You can keep /usr/portage for now, but sooner or later is better to change

You don't need to move it but you need to specify the Portage tree's location consistently across all configuration files. The new /var/db/repos/gentoo location is more consistent with the FHS which states that /usr is for read only data and /var is for things that change more often. Standards compliance is, all other things being equal, a Good Thing™, so you might want to consider moving it long term.

Edit: Ninja'd by fedeliallalinea again. :P

It's interesting that even the very latest stage tarball (as of this writing) has those three lines.

You right, but until quite recently some programs was using yet PORTDIR, see https://bugs.gentoo.org/546210

Right. I had forgotten that.

For now, this could be considered a subtle bug in app-shells/gentoo-bashcomp as Portage itself is not confused by the inconsistency.
