|
|
Hello,
I recently started using a docking station for my laptop. My laptop runs Gentoo, Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and Win 10.
As soon as I use my laptop in combination with the docking station, the connected monitor is not recognized and set up properly by Gentoo.
In the terminal environment (so no KDE / Plasma active) the lower part (approx. 5 cm) is not used. If I start KDE / Plasma from the command line, it will take much longer (compared to the undocked situation) before KDE / Plasma is started. After it is started, it shows my desktop (wallpaper, mouse, icons) but the taskbar is not visible.
Using Ubuntu it works better, KDE / Plasma starts up equal fast and windows environment is displayed and adjusted fine (taskbar, icons, background, mouse). Unfortunately, in the terminal environment (ctrl-alt F5, so no KDE / Plasma active) also the lower part (approx. 5 cm) is also not used.
In the docked Ubuntu situation, xrandr shows:
Code: | xrandr

If this is a case of RTFM, can someone tell me which FM to start reading first?
That would also help a lot.
Thanks in advance.

Hi GenHeDi,
the monitor resolutions of your laptop screen and external monitor differ (1920x1080 vs 1920x1200). Have you tried setting both to 1920x1080 and does this problems also occur then? Also in the Gentoo xrandr output after undocking you can see a VIRTUAL1 which does not match your laptop resolution. You can change this by using the xrandr cli.
Have you had a look at your KDE System Settings -> Display and Monitor? It should show how the monitors are aligned and I guess if you move them around you could get your taskbar back. Also which KDE and Plasma versions are you using? Which display adapter and driver versions?
I have a multi monitor hidpi setup with docking station @work and it took some time to get it running well. But sometimes I still have issues after docking or undocking (especially if the laptop is suspended along the way). In such situations I use a script aligning the monitors with xrandr commands. _________________ # cd /pub/

Hello forrestfunk81,
Thank you for responding.I am new in using xrandr. Can you provide a bit more information in using the xrandr cli?
Can you also explain how to enter KDE System Settings -> Display and Monitor when I'm not able to see or reach the taskbar?
Thanks in advance.

In KDE you can open applications by using the Plasma Search (default keyboard shortcuts ALT + space).
With xrandr you can try something like this
Code: |
xrandr --auto --output eDP1 --mode 1920x1080
xrandr --auto --output HDMI1 --mode 1920x1080 --right-of eDP1
|

There are graphical front ends to xrandr like lxde-base/lxrandr. |

Hello,
Sorry for (very) late response, I was stuck in all kinds of other Gentoo challenges
After executing following command:
Code: | # xrandr --auto --output HDMI1 --mode 1920x1080 |
The taskbar of KDE appeared. But my monitor complained that I should use a resolution of 1920x1200.

I tried to change the display setting of KDE, but it seems that I am missing an icon. "KDE System Settings -> Display and Monitor" only shows an Compositor icon and an Night Color icon.
A minimal KDE environment is installed on my Gentoo system, so probably I am missing some apps.
What could be missing? Because Google is not helping a lot me at this moment.
KDE version 5.17.4
KDE Frameworks 5.64.0
Qt 5.13.2
Thanks in advance.

Hello,
I managed to get a step ahead. Apparently kscreen was not installed, so I installed it.
Now "KDE System Settings -> Display and Monitor" shows a third icon called "Display and Monitor". It it possible to select
this icon and my two screen are shown and also recognized.
The strange part of it is that xrandr puts resolution to a resolution of 1920x1200 and KDE uses 1920x1200.
In the Display and monitor screen I am able to toggle between the two screens. Switching back and forth has no effect on the actual screen appearance.
The second strange part of it is that the selection buttons below (help, standard, reset and apply) are light gray and not functional.
So, I am not able to apply my changes or monitor selection.
Does anyone know what is still missing?
Kind regards

SOLVED IT!!!!
I tried several settings with xrandr, determined several configurations with cvt. Unfortunately, nothing helped and my taskbar doesn't show up.
In the meantime I got the feeling that something was missing in my Plasma configuration. This is due to the fact that I installed the kde-plasma/plasma-desktop meta package.
This warning finally convinced me:
Quote: | Warning
Please note that only installing kde-plasma/plasma-desktop will be missing important packages such as kde-plasma/powerdevil (power management, suspend and hibernate options), kde-plasma/systemsettings and many more, do not expect support in this case. |
So, I installed the kde-plasma/plasma-meta package. After trying some settings in the system settings menu; pop, there was my taskbar.
