Hello Friends!

I have not had a Gentoo machine in several years. Today I decided to spin up a Gentoo VM with my VPS provider. 8 hours later I've somehow managed to update the kernel on this little QEMU system and get the base packages updated.
It feels good to be back!

:D

Welcome back.

Nobody leaves Gentoo. We knew you would be back, just not when. :)

A fellow minimalist ;). I've been using fluxbox for ages now...with no desktop icons at all. I have hotkeys setup to launch program I use all the time and tend to launch others from a terminal. Welcome back!

I do the same with openbox, I dislike desktop icons, hotkeys are the way to go :) (menu for backup but I doubt I use it more than 2-3 times a year)

I detest clicking desktop icons or anything that unnecessarily requires using the mouse. Funny note speaking of hotkeys, if you want the textbook example of how not to handle them, look no further than Windows: First of all, in order to have a hotkey at all you first must create a desktop icon, then assign a hotkey to that. However the first thing you'll find is that that hotkey will only launch one instance of that program because it's "smart" enough to know it's "already running" and "you don't really want to do that"...and there's no setting to override that behavior. The only work around, say for example if you want a hotkey to allow you to open multiple command prompt windows, is to create the desktop icon with the command "cmd /c start cmd" which tricks it into doing what you want by disassociating the icon with the final command. It must actually be difficult to get literally everything that wrong :D.
