I decided to give 2.6 a spin on my ultra 2.
The configuration and compilation were easy as pie,
I actually had fewer problems (0) than I had on my
Pentium 4 laptop. Anyways, on to the problem.
2.6 boots. Everything loads fine. No errors.
While it's booting things work, apache2 is serving my site,
mysql is working, everything's fine. Then once it loads local
the machine locks up and nothing but powering it down
has any effect on it. Tried compiling with a few different
configurations (none of which seemed necessary to me)
and nothing changed. So I'm back on 2.4.23 for the moment
until I hear of any breakthroughs. _________________ Grrr, can't think of anything clever right now, I'll go back and edit this later (9/12/2003) |

Sound more like a problem with init, not the kernel.
I haven't got knowledge of 2.6 yet, but are you sure you have all the needed tools for 2.6 besides the kernel itself? |

I don't know why init would have a problem, it has no problems with 2.4, and it loads everything as it normally would, it only locks up after it loads the "local" service. Also, I'm pretty sure I've got everything I need in place for 2.6, I have 2.6 running on my P4 laptop and my Opteron workstation, and as I said, in this case everything loads and works until the local service is loaded. Like once apache2 loads, I can access my website without a problem until local loads. _________________ Grrr, can't think of anything clever right now, I'll go back and edit this later (9/12/2003) |

So why haven't you disabled local?
I've seen plenty of kernel boots give misleading hints as to the problem source. The console log is the tip of the tail of the dog, and when the nose gets it first, the correct failure message rarely gets to the tail. _________________ Being a Gentoo user means living in a house inhabited by a family of crazed carpenters.
