I installed ,rebooted succesfully into gentoo. my first thing i was trying to do is get x working . I had already emerged X during install, all i needed was the nvidia drivers for my gf4. I try to emerge, but it semms i have no internet connection, so i active adsl-connect & to start my pppoe connection. It gives a ton of errors, like
could'nt open pty slave /dev/pts/0 : no file or directory
I had a backup if things like this happened so i got my cd that had the drivers and popped it in
ls /mnt/cdrom
shows nothing. so maybe the cdrom wasnt mounted. I try to do
mount /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 /mnt/cdrom o -ro t iso9660
the one eaxctly from the install guide. No dice, it says /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 doesnt exsist.
So I try to start X anyways, and it gives me a hell of a lot of errors. I go through xf86config and create the file. I try startx again and more errors (no screens found , etc) so im stuck.
If anyone could guide me through the process of getting the nvidia drivers to work and then configuring X and my internet connection, I would grealty appriacte it.
thanks |

Sounds like you may not be running devfs, are there any files in your /dev directory? Is devfsd running? Did you enable devfs in the kernel? |

i enabled devfs in the kernel, recomplied (make dev && make clean bzImage modules modules_install), and I cp the bzimage to boot. I use the reboot command to reboot my machine and when it starts up it says devfs is not enabled. I did this a second time (used menuconfig, make dep, bzimage, copy from /usr/src/linux/ etc to /boot, reboot) and it still says i did not have devfs enabled. I made sure it was installed and not a module. hellppppp |

Do you have ppp and pppoe enabled in the kernel? Do you have ppp and pppoed merged?
