Do you have somewhere to host your ISO? | just got back from a weekend away...
As of yet no (could use my github for now), but first things first it has to boot this might just be my host OS has no kvm (de-selected a few kernels back thinking I don't need it anymore) _________________

That said it was the hostOS lacking KVM support. the ISO boots in virtualbox (black window with qemu so I might look into that).
But it works !
I want to loop back and double-check the steps and then ill start adding some basic packages to get a simple xsession working and take it from there _________________

sabayonino,
Its probably a bad idea to keep the SystemRescueCD name.
That might upset the SystemRescueCD project.
Thank you for keeping this alive. _________________ Regards,

You're right.
But I've update sysrcd.dat only.
There was many conflicts and errors that I solved upgrading profile , gcc + glibc binutils and some other stuffs and keep the original make.conf as much as possible.
I did this just for my fun and I don't think I'm going any further. Maybe I forgot some things during the upgrading phase.
I'm not a coder .
Original code is available on SourceForge
If you believe that there are problems with the torrent sharing I will stop it.

GentooRescueCD if the Gods of Gentoo permit. Perhaps they will allow it to be an official project with a designated proxy maintainer?
EDIT:
GRescueCD or just RescueCD if they do not. Although RedHat may object to prefixing with a G. |

Tony0945,
Gentoo uses the 'e' prefix everywhere. ebuild, eudev, eselect, emerge, ... _________________ Regards,

sabayonino,
I'll draw your attention to Gentoo name and logo usage guidelines
In effect it says you need permission to use the Gentoo name.
May as well get these things out of the way early.
As a past trustee of Gentoo Foundation, Inc., I have an interest in these things. I cannot speak for the current board.
The Gentoo Foundation, Inc. exists to facilitate these sort of things without making the name and logo public domain, like the walking fingers and other marks and logos.
Well done! Its looking good. _________________ Regards,

To get around the Gentoo name restriction, how about 'SysRescueToo'? _________________ Clevo W230SS: amd64, VIDEO_CARDS="intel modesetting nvidia".

I'm not a lawyer, but from your link: Quote: | Products and services serving the community
You may incorporate the Gentoo name into any website or product whose purpose is to organize, educate or inform the Gentoo community, provided that:
The website or product does not use the Gentoo logo or mimic the official sites in its design, except as provided for by earlier sections in this license;
The website or product does not imply that it is official or otherwise endorsed by the Gentoo Foundation, Inc.
If a fee is to be charged for the product, or for access to any or all of the material on the website, a clear statement must exist declaring what proportion of those fees will be retained by the authors, and what proportion, if any, will be contributed back to the Gentoo Foundation, Inc. A link to this statement must be prominently displayed on the website or product.
| Emphasis by me. A clear statement, perhaps on every page that this is unofficial and not sanctioned by the Foundation nor the Council Products
should be sufficient. Or do you hold that "gentoo" should be referred to as "that which cannot be named"? I'm being serious, not sarcastic.
Regarding domain names, I have registered the domain "oldgentoo.net" and if I ever put a website on it, I will prominently display disclaimers.
To me this is like a website selling speed equipment and mentioning that it is for use on Chevrolet or Ford engines. |

I would agree to that, not to get around the Gentoo name per the restriction, but more to not tag it as Gentoo.
That sysrecuecd was great because (gentoo base or not) it was doing the work for any distros, now with the arch problem (no 32bits, no more on one CD, and systemd) it has lost its value.
You should keep a generic name, because it was great for everyone, not just gentoo users. |

This is just sad. "Get around the Gentoo name"? Shouldn't Gentoo be welcoming these kind of grassroots, community driven efforts? SMH. Things are worse than I thought. |

berferd,
Its rock/hard place. If gentoo does not protect its name/logo, they become public domain.
The proposed disclaimer works.
An email to the trustees works too. At worst, they can say "no".
Personally, I would be wary of anything that uses the Gentoo or SystemRescueCD names, or even looks like it was derived from them.
Tony0945,
There is no issue with your oldgentoo.net.
You post the disclaimer.
You host the ebuilds with the copyright notices intact.
The ebuilds all say Code: | # Distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License v2 | so hosting is allowed.
Everyone is happy. _________________ Regards,

Would you automatically welcome anyone who wants to come in and use your name on a project, when you have no control over whether such usage will meet your standards for quality? What if, through negligence, malice, or simple inexperience, that person brought shame to the project by releasing a dangerously broken build?
I'm glad to see someone trying to carry on the SystemRescue project, and I hope he has both the time and experience to make the result a credit to himself and to the projects on which it is based. However, with no way to guarantee that he will continue meeting that standard for as long as the project exists, I can't blame the trustees for being cautious about how the Gentoo name is used. |

Is this an imaginary problem, or has someone asked as was suggested?

pjp,
Some projects have two sets of names and or logos. One reserved for the 'official project' one for the community to use.
Gentoo doesn't do this although znurt and larry the cow might come close.
Neither are registered marks of Gentoo.
What we are really discussing here is a fork.
OpenOffice became libreoffice
Xfree86 became Xorg
and so on ...
My point is to get this fork off to a sound start without upsetting the project it was forked from, nor the project whose toolkit will be used to build it.
Name changes later will be a PITA. _________________ Regards,

First of all, I wish say: "thank you" to sabayonino for keeping the rescue project based on gentoo.
NeddySeagoon wrote: | I'll draw your attention to Gentoo name and logo usage guidelines

English is not my native language and I'm not a lawyer, but in my opinion, the name "gentoo rescue" don't need the approval of Gentoo Foundation for two concurrent reason:
1) Quote: | It is also important to note that this license only applies if you intend to use (or are already using) a trademark of your own that incorporates the Gentoo name, and/or incorporates the official logo/colors of the Gentoo project. If your usage of the Gentoo name is purely nominative, you don’t need to license the Gentoo trademark - nominative use is an allowed use under trademark law. |
If sabayonino will make clear that "gentoo rescue" is a unofficial project based on gentoo distribution, I think the first condition will be respected.
I have the same opinion of Tony0945.
AND
2) Quote: | You may use the Gentoo name and logo on a list of services, tools, or supported platforms, or as an identifier that a product or service is Gentoo-related, provided that the usage of the name and/or logo does not imply that the organization is official or otherwise endorsed by the Gentoo Foundation, Inc., or by the Gentoo project, and that the name and/or logo acts as a hyperlink to the main Gentoo project website wherever technically possible. |
I can't find any "rescue" project on official gentoo website. So, using the term "rescue" in the name, there is no conflict with other official projects.
Please, double check what I wrote: I can misunderstood the terms of Gentoo name and logo usage guidelines. TIA.
Keep in mind that, so far, I don't have checked the license of SystemRescueCD. _________________ proud user of faKeDE-4.7.3 -> back to windowmaker -> moved to LXQt |
