Just wondering if any other gentoo folks used a VPN (the tinfoil hat kind, not the "my work needs me to sign in" kind), and if you do:

1. Why? Do you live in an authoritarian regime, or is it simply a healthy computer habit?
2. Are you a network security guy? How do you judge what is a good or a bad VPN?
3. Once you know what you want, what did you end up using?

No. I do not use a VPN. It seems to be some sort of emerging fad.

considering the UK is enabling a wankers law in the next couple of days and the EU is enabling a meme's law in the next couple of days, considering NZ is enabling a hide the truth law right now... the FAD is in response to governments hiding information

I do not, and this is a significant reason why. The other significant reason is that I don't really have a need. I've mainly thought of doing it for testing stuff across a VPN.

I think some people talk about it as if they were being targeted by state level agencies. Others might do it for pirating, not sure. But I know some do it to evade "not available in your country."

Not for normal use. I do use a couple for various reasons. Watching geographically restricted YouTube videos in the lame reason, and while travelling is the good reason.

Nord VPN is quite good, and the free VPNs from protonmail are decent.

The last time I used a (implemented and configured my own) VPN for non-work related activities was nearly two decades ago because of game limitations. A close friend of mine moved "far away" and to enable TCP/IP "LAN" play the game in question would only work if every player was on the same broadcast network. It wasn't perfect but it did enable "non-work" related activities to occur. I don't think this is in the spirit of what you are talking about -- however it does seem to be in "the letter" of what you are talking about.

Cheers!

Invest in VPN companies!

The EU just voted in Article 13, link taxes and all.

This makes me wonder if the various VPN companies were the ones really lobbying for these laws...

I started using Nord VPN after some (mostly US) foreign websites stopped serving EU users.

Nope. Thankfully Ireland isn't that fucked yet. I just use tor to skirt around the occasional copyright censorship.

Not at present but am considering. Here's why.

What I have noticed, is packet... prioritizing by my present ISP, former ISP, and former ISP in an entirely different region of the US. 3 different ISP's around the US...

The common theme seems to be degradation in Youtube, Netflix, the general stream-media sites... Hulu in there as well.

How can I tell you ask?
Stumble onto say... an unauthorized 'movie stream' site from anywhere online. Funny how I can watch that come across in 1080p HD, yet the random 1080p HD Youtube video buffers now and then. And Netflix won't even bother bumping up to 1080p with it. 720p seems to be its peak on present ISP..
/isn't a PC/software issue...

Coincidence right? The patterns do start to emerge if you see them often enough. Will a VPN resolve that? Hard to say, but worth a test at least.
