Hey folks,

Decided to pop in and say hello after 10 years of silence, almost anyway. My last post appears to be in April 2009. That must also be about where I stopped using Gentoo after 6 years of loving it.
From Gentoo my trip took me over to Windows where I spent about ten years, first managing it in the company I worked for, then as a consultant and finally even worked as a Field Engineer at Microsoft helping customers with Windows and the deployment tools, for the last 8 years.
Never forgot Linux, I've been running at least one server at home all the time, but it had to be low maintenance so the current Raspberry serving DHCP and DNS is running Raspbian.
In October I got tired of the travel a Field Engineer deals with and changed to another company as an architect. After the initial brain reset period Linux was again on my mind. On my Lenovo P50 I've been running another flavor now for a few months, running i3 and keeping it simple, but for weeks now my thoughts keep coming back to Gentoo. So I think it's time, tomorrow, after work it's time to awaken the old Linux nerd in me and again plunge into the wonderful world of Gentoo.

So hello again all new and old members. The forums are not as active as they were back in the day but it's nice to be back. See you around :D

No, quite the opposite. It's time to dig into Gentoo again. It's been a long time and looking at the installation manuals a lot has changed, and some is still as it used to be back in the days. Tonight it's time for the first Gentoo install in many years.

Ubuntu is meh. I might do a gentoo install myself. I basically haven't used gentoo since having my first child - about 10 years ago as well.

I never understood why anyone who knows what they are doing would use Ubuntu. Debian's fine.

Of course Gentoo is the superior option, but it takes a lot of TLC. I use Gentoo/Pentoo (overlay) and Kali (which is a Debian fork). I don't know what it is about Ubuntu that annoyed me, but something did and my opinion of it has been bad since it launched.

Ubuntu is trying to automagicaly sort things out for the user and fails to do so (previous experiences not sure how it is now). Then you have to fix shit yourself and have to fight Ubuntus magic in addition.

I'd say the modern ones work pretty well. Sometimes a little bit buggy, but nothing is perfect. I think they have gotten a lot better over the years.

I just ran out of time on account of kids and work.

I am thinking of getting a desktop and I might give gentoo a try on that.
