Anybody here knows anything about Android? My el-cheapo Moto 3 suddenly stopped ringing. I tried to figure out why but gave up, did a factory reset, in hope it would fix it. It did not. 8O Otherwise the phone functions normally, just no ringing and no sound when text message arrives. The OS is 5.1. Must be some sort of software hickup, methinks?

Thanks for reply. Unfortunately none of this is helpful in my case. From my reading I understand if file associations are broken for some reason sound files may not play any more. I had a custom file manager installed, so I was thinking maybe it got screwed up somehow. To my disappointment factory reset didn't fix it. I think somehow the sound files are not played any more. I know too little about inner works of Android ...

You could try flashing LineageOS on there, the Moto G3 is up to 14.1 (Android 7.1). It might do the trick. Instructions are linked on the download page for the device. Just make sure the codename of your device corresponds with the image you download or you could brick it, and fixing that ranges from no fun at all, to tossing it into the bin. If in any doubt at all, get the specific model of the handset from About Phone in the android settings menu, and look it up on Wikipedia, the codename should be on the right, like so: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moto_G_(3rd_generation).

Yes, thanks, I've been thinking about it, not exactly a 10 minute job. Getting rid of big (huge) brother Google is tempting indeed.

You're a bit optimist there Jaglover, while i agree LineageOS might help a lot to counter manufactured additions that breach privacy, i don't think LineageOS that is android base would be of help vs Google ones.
But that could be me too pessimist :)

I wonder if I somehow deleted ringtones. Of course, there are no errors seen ... what's going on behind that GUI? Hate GUI's ... Anyone knows where ringtones are in Android 5.1 tree?

Edit: I purchased this phone years ago from Amazon for $20 - they had some sort of promo. Perhaps this is all one can get for $20? Time for a new phone?

I'm not a smartphone fan. If I was I'd buy some shiny and expensive one. But I have to admit they have the size advantage when traveling on a motorcycle.

You can add custom ringtones or notifications simply creating a new folder into internal memory named Ringtones and Notifications and put your song.
Default ringtones are located in /system/media/audio/ringtones but you need to use a 3rd party file manager (I use Solid Explorer) and directory is read only.

Yea I did factory reset, but it only erased all user stuff, it didn't reload the OS [from some secret ROM?]. I need the smartphone only as backup for my GPS. Couldn't care less what version of Android it runs. Oh, I'd like to use it for voice calls, too ...

My Nexus 5 is starting to show its age. I'm seeing weird behavior with the battery. Anyone know of a suitable replacement? I want to stick to having an unlocked phone and not use a carrier with pre-installed/uninstallable spycrap installed on it.

I've been keeping an eye on the Librem 5, but am hesitant to preorder something so wildly different.

Oneplus. I ordered mine from Amazon (Oneplus 3T) unlocked. It was easy enough to root as well.

What do you know. I got myself a new phone, Motorola Moto E5 Play. I put the old phone aside, intended to play with it when I feel like rooting it. Then wife managed to sink her phone, I thought a silent phone is better than no phone and put her SIM card into it. To my surprise it is not silent any more ... Shall I sacrifice a lamb or what? To what god, Hecate?
