So one day my father called and said, hey the little bar on the bottom and top is gone.
(referring to xfce4's default icon launcher/start bar)
so i reboot it, and root is not mounting automatically anymore.. further more the hostname went missing replaced with @(none)
so, im able to still log in, then log in root, then mount / from there and then everything comes back... except /tmp remains unwritable? (and probably /var and every other dir) but i only noticed /tmp because portage will fail with gpg :errono 30 no dirmgr //cannot write on tmp.
i dont have a seperate partition on that pc for /home tmp or root, its all on /.
computer worked fine for 2 years, i do all the updating on it. he does nothing with it except stay in userland. i last updated it about a month ago, no problems, everything smooth. then he noticed the desktop bars missing about 4 days ago. |

sao98021,
Look in dmesg for signs of disk or filesystem problems, or both.
It appears that root is being mount read only, rootfsck fails so root stays read only and its all downhill from there.
Do not run fsck unless you have a backup. It can make a bad situation worse. _________________ Regards,

those that do backups
those that have never had a hard drive fail. |
