Why gdm don’t start? I have installed Gnome 3.24 and systemd, but gdm don’t start. Gnome start with xinitrc only.
At boot appears the login, but does not gdm.

I'm having the exact same problem. Not logs, no output, just caret flicker for some while. After that I can log in and use startx to fire up gnome. I'm using radeon driver. After login, systemctl status gdm reports it running, ps aux | grep gdm also reports a running process. Tried to re-emerge gnome, no luck.Tried to fire it up manually using /usr/sbin/gdm, just hangs there and does nothing. Lightdm works fine, but I would prefer gdm.
EDIT
Also seems related https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1089074-highlight-gdm.html , though masking the version did not help. |

Hi palethorn,
I am having the same problem, as outlined here
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1095856-highlight-gdm.html
Have you found a solution? |

.xinitrc presence can mess up GNOME and other non-basic desktop environments pretty good - don't have it present for GNOME.
You can start GNOME with other login managers. If you want to use startx, then you should just set XSESSION environment variable to Gnome (XSESSION=Gnome), not make an .xinitrc.
For GDM debugging would need to see the relevant logs. There were curious cases of some directories /var/lib/gdm become root owned for some reason, and then Xorg log file not being writable and it exiting, so gdm-3.30.3-r3 adds back a workaround for that and may help. _________________ GNOME team lead; GStreamer; MIPS/ARM64 |
