Any ideas how to fix?

You use systemd or OpenRC?

I did notice the possible reference to systemd and was a little surprised by this.

If the patch works open also a new bug

Easiest way is to follow Gentoo wiki directions: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki//etc/portage/patches

It worked. That is to say, it built.

I just went to submit a bug, but I see that it has already been discovered and fixed by others.
