cannot record with a 3.5mm mic not even thru type-c to 3.5mm adapter dmesg says nothing when its plugged in. only mic which does record is the buildin webcam mic.

Please put the output of

alsa-info.sh

onto a pastebin. It tells everything anyone could possibly want to know about alsa.

alsamixer only shows playback controls by default. Run alsamixer, then press F4 to see recording controls.
Like playback controls, they are all off (Muted) until you change the settings.

When your external mic works, your webcam mic probably won't. Most sound cards can have only one input active at a time.
