|

Installing my new pc and as before I want to go with KDE. Just did a "emerge --pretend plasma-desktop". This strangle tells me that IO have to change the use for mesa to include wayland.
I don't want wayland. Is this really a dependency for KDE? All the other dependencies I see are for X which is already set up. _________________ Expert in non-working solutions |

Yes, KWin now requires Wayland even if you never intend to use it. It's a deliberate decision by upstream to couple the code so tightly. |

Ok, time to look for another desktop.
What's another good configurable desktop without idiot set-in-stone choices? I liked K3B, Kate, Okular and Konqueror (for file management). The rest will likely run on whatever desktop (Claws, Opera, Jack, LO, Gimp...). _________________ Expert in non-working solutions |

Why don't you like Wayland?
I switched to KDE in Wayland mode 6 months ago and I'm very happy. If you really don't like Wayland, you can start KDE in X11 mode, no big deal. |

You can continue to do that.
If you start KDE in X11 mode, everything will be exactly as it was before.
If you start KDE in Wayland mode, things will be a bit different. But even then, you will be able to run X11 programs on your local machine or on a remote machine. No need to worry. X11/Wayland developers did a great job!
The only thing that doesn't work well nowadays is: run a Wayland-only program on a remote machine and display its output in a window on your local machine. But as long as you use X11 programs, you won't have problems.

Just use a wm and assign the apps you like. No need for all the overhead of something like KDE.
I'm partial to i3wm, but there are a plethora of choices. _________________ "You can lead a horticulture but you can't make her think" ~ Dorothy Parker

It's just a library, why the hate?
Besides, even in your X session KWin will use parts of the kwayland protocol code, in particular for secure screen locking. |

It is not hate, but why should something be a hard dependency if it is not used? Something is fishy and I don't trust such things.

There are going to be aplenty of such things already in the software that you use, but you care about the wayland library because you recognise its name? It is important to note that Wayland is not "another X" that takes up the same space. It is a protocol that KWin is able to speak by its implementation as a compositor.

What is it compared to any other nondescript library KWin uses? |

If you want something as good or better than KDE3/4 were, Enlightenment might be worth a try. It takes a lot of getting used to though. I just use openbox. |
