Hi,

On a new install (but I use gentoo for a long time), I can't get input sound, in microphone input, nor line in.
I have all unmuted in alsamixer, all capture activated, all mixers 100%, no input.
Integrated shipset in Motherboard Z370 GAMING PLUS (MS-7B61).
I don't use pulseaudio, only alsa.
I test with
Code:
arecord -vv --format=dat --device=plughw:0,X /dev/nul

X = 0 or 2

Here what I have :
Code:
$ lspci | grep -i audio
00:1f.3 Audio device: Intel Corporation 200 Series PCH HD Audio
01:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation GP107GL High Definition Audio Controller (rev a1)

2nd controler from HDMI disabled with (I had no input sound before neither):
Code:
$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/alc892.conf
options snd-hda-intel model=inv-dmic enable=1,0

I tried this model, but I don't really know what to use from https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git/tree/Documentation/sound/hd-audio/models.rst
Code:
$ cat /proc/asound/pcm
00-00: ALC892 Analog : ALC892 Analog : playback 1 : capture 1
00-02: ALC892 Alt Analog : ALC892 Alt Analog : capture 1

Code:
$ cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [PCH            ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH
                      HDA Intel PCH at 0xdf140000 irq 123

Code:
$ head -n 1 /proc/asound/card0/codec*
Codec: Realtek ALC892

Code:
$ cat /proc/asound/modules
 0 snd_hda_intel

Code:
$ lsmod | grep snd

The display of alsamixer can be deceptive, some controls may be hidden, perhaps you can see more when you use arrow right to scroll? (Or look at amixer outout.) My 2¢.

If you boot with some Live CD, like Ubuntu or Mint, do the inputs work?

Tried with an (old) USB key Gentoo I have, and same result as my gentoo, no input
Tried with an (not recent) USB key ubuntu 17.1 I have, but impossible to start "try ubuntu". I spent a moment for nothing and gave up.
I'm now creating an new USB key with ubuntu 18.04.1
Edit : nothing better with ubuntu live.

Intel HDA audio is notoriously buggy, newer chips are worse. This is the 3rd or 4th case of this I've seen in the last few months, in fact. Not to say it won't be fixed at some point, but it looks like upstream has little interest in supporting their own products.

You may have to resort to using another sound device for input; USB ones are usually reliable.

Input is not perfect either.
I will surely buy a PCIe sound card like https://www.ldlc.com/fiche/PB00185552.html
In my previous PC, I had a Creative soundblaster live 1024! for 15 years.
Better driver, better sound, and no bug.

Thanks

plug some other sound resonatic device like an mp3 player or an old tape recorder to the mic input and see if sound comes. the mic might be broken.
also from the SW perspective try audacity to record sound.

No, that's not the problem. I didn't talk about mic problem, but INPUT problem. As I already said, the problem is with microphone input AND line input.

Useless.
audacity won't help if arecord doesn't work.

0

That's a chipset integrated (ALC892, Realtek) in coffeelake proc. which uses snd-hda-intel module.

May be could you read my first post :

But nevermind. I'll buy a real soundcard.

Thanks for your help.

What a pity.
I wanted a creative, and I bought https://www.ldlc.com/fiche/PB00157402.html
But, it has the same chipset as integrated in my MB.
So, the same module, and the same result.

What 5.1 sound card is really actually well integrated in the kernel ?
What to buy now if creative is now so bad ?

Most likely it's a kernel issue.

My advice is to built driver as module and install firmware package.
In many cases one need 2!!! modules to enable audio.
One is hda-sound-intel and another one is SoC like here:

Code:
Kernel modules: snd_hda_intel, snd_soc_skl
