I purchased a Dell PowerEdge 1950 to install Linux and learn.
I used a USB 3.0 and made it bootable using imageusb and got the following error when attempting to boot to the USB. | Quote: | | Isolinux.bin corrupt or missing error |
The server recognized the device but shot that error. I know it works because I have booted to the liveusb on another PC.
I then formatted the USB and tried using the DD command on another Linux machine and got the same error.
I then proceeded to think maybe it was the USB, so I changed to an older USB 2.0 using imageusb, rufus and dd command in a Linux VM I have on my laptop. All came to the same error when trying to boot to it.
I then thought maybe because the bios were outdated, so I updated the bios on the server. Still no success.
I then went ahead and downloaded Nero and burned the iso image on DVD and tried booting it off the DVD. I got this: | Quote: | | Syslinux 3.86 EBIOS Copyright (C) 1994-2010 H> Peter Anvin et al |
But still will not boot to the Gentoo.
I tried shutting bios controller off and then booting to the live DVD and got the isolinux.bin missing or corrupt error again.
I know they work because both USB's and the cd booted fine on another pc but this server will not boot to the live Gentoo.
Any ideas as to why or any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Or, alternatively, read The Gentoo Handbook before you start installing anything. Once you finish reading it you will realize you do not need Gentoo installation media. |
I have read the forum link you provided.
I made a bootable SystemRescueCD live usb image yet I get the same error.

As far as CD goes, wouldn't DVD or CD be the same? Just that DVD has more storage, I know I am wasting away a DVD but I do not own CDs, which is why I went the DVD route. |

I went into the BIOS and saw that feature. The USB is listed as AUTO.
The only options it gave me were: Auto/ Floppy/ Hard Drive.
I changed it from Auto to Hard drive and it finally booted into the live image.
Thank you.
Out of curiosity, changing it from Auto to Hard drive will make the USB seem as an internal hard drive and with the BIOS controller on, BIOS would then recognize the USB as a hard drive and is able to boot off of it?
Another question, why wouldn't the BIOS controller still recognize it under AUTO? |

Yes it is basically the same technology with just the difference in the width of the holes burned on the optical medium. More or less the same just in case of neutrino bombardment from the sky a DVD would break more easily. Collateral damage from the alien wars.

This is a question for developers who wrote the BIOS code. With legacy boot there is MBR - master boot record - which contains executable code for loading the next stage. When BIOS is not cooperating the boot will halt.
Did you run isohybrid on the ISO image before you put it on USB?

I have not tried this. I just grabbed the minimal image iso and placed it on the usb using imageusb.
I did not try running the isohybrid.
But changing the BIOS settings worked for the USB emulator type. |
