PostPosted: Fri Jan 11, 2019 3:20 pm    Post subject: Computer freezes when starting Libreoffice [solved] Reply with quote

I have libreoffice-6.1.4.2 installed on my (unstable) system. The problem first occurred when i changed the measurement unit from inch to millimeter and restarted office.
It freezed my System (Lenovo Thinkpad E485).
From then on only loads the branding when starting Libreoffice, but instead of the application window the screen freezes and keystrokes have no effect.

Things i have tried so far:

Deleted cache and config files
I have re-emerged libreoffice and all of its dependencies but the problem persists.

Do any of you know a way to find out more about the error occurring?

I see the use flag 'wayland' in your output of 'emerge --info'.

Did you start LibreOffice in Wayland mode? Does it work better if you start it in X11 mode? Try:
Code:
WAYLAND_DISPLAY='' /usr/bin/libreoffice --nologo

If that doesn't help: please post what LibreOffice writes to your terminal when you start it.

WAYLAND_DISPLAY='' /usr/bin/libreoffice --nologo
Code:
javaldx: Could not find a Java Runtime Enviroment !
Warning: failed to read path from javaldx

then the whole thing freezes again

Where did this java bug come from?
virtual/jre-1.8.0-r1 & virtual/jdk-1.8.0-r3 seem to bee installed on my system.

MadNoah,

Linux, X11 and LibreOffice are very mature and stable nowadays. It's very unusual that the whole system freezes when you start LibreOffice. That's probably also the reason why nobody (except me) answered so far.

But this tells us something: it's not a simple bug or mis-configuration. Something is fundamentally broken on your machine. It won't be easy to find the reason for the freezes - but we can try.

  1. Please install a different (and stable) version of your graphics driver. Does that help?

  2. Please try a different (and stable) kernel version. Does that help?

  3. When the system freezes: are you still able to switch to a console window? Ore are you able to log in from a remote machine using ssh? If you are, please execute the 2 statements below and post the results:
    Code:
    w
    free

  4. Do you see any unusual messages in dmesg or in one of the log files after your desktop freezes?

  5. Which desktop environment do you use?

  6. Is LibreOffice the only program that is affected? What happens if you start Firefox, Thunderbird or other GUI programs? Do they work as expected? Or do you see any problems or artifacts?

Mike

1: The problem seem to persists also with the 4.14.83-kernel (i will try some others to)
2: Im allready on stable linux-firmware-20181218 & xf86-video-amdgpu-18.1.0 (Libreoffice worked flawless before with these versions installed)
3: No, its not possible to switch to anoter window or tty
4: No
5: I use Sway as my desktop enviroment so X11 support is provided by Xwayland. Sorry I should have mentioned that earlier.
6: Yes, LibreOffice the only program affected. The other Applications work (also those who need X11).

If you create a test user and run LibreOffice, do you still experience same freeze?

I just installed and launched Sway. LibreOffice runs perfectly fine - even after changing the measurement unit.

But I remember that I had system freezes last year when I tested Sway (I switched to Wayland and tested various desktop environments). I had to press the reset button to get out of those freezes. I think it was the only time I had freezes within the last 10+ years.

Could it be related to Sway? After all, it's still not marked as stable. Please try a different desktop environment. Weston for example - it's a Wayland compositor, it's small and it's easy to install. Does your machine also freeze if you start LibreOffice from a different desktop environment?

Where is the segmentation fault? The output you posted only shows diagnostics reporting that the Gtk libraries dislike how the caller is using them.

I have to add these are not critical - I. E. they wont stop the application from working. Also I assume despite these warnings the application actually started and was usable. To conclude, now you know the problem is in your home directory. You mentioned you removed config files, what files exactly did you remove?

Hey. I'm having the same issues with libreoffice.

app-office/libreoffice
Latest version available: 6.1.5.2
Latest version installed: 6.1.5.2
Size of files: 218,583 KiB
Homepage: https://www.libreoffice.org
Description: A full office productivity suite
License: || ( LGPL-3 MPL-1.1 )

on ~amd64, but I also had this issue few weeks ago on a stable system.

Standard emerging:
app-office/libreoffice-6.1.5.2::gentoo USE="bluetooth branding cups dbus gtk"

For me there is a crash without logfiles right after the splash screen.The pc freezes completely. Deleting cache and config files suggested in older workarounds didn't do it for me either.

I see you are using the same drivers as me:

VIDEO_CARDS="amdgpu radeonsi"

Which graphic card are you using, if i may ask?

lspci | grep VGA
03:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Vega 10 XL/XT [Radeon RX Vega 56/64] (rev c3)

by any chance?

edit: i've forgotten to mention that i'm using xfce4 as desktop environment + xfwm4

Looks like the OP is also using a Vega:

I got rid of vlc and installed openoffice. Worked frickin great. Way better loadingtimes and kind of compatible too. Just a side of the counter offer. Binary package though. No challange.

I encountered same problem of freezing, and after long trying i found out that instead of using all threads of the CPU.

:idea: reducing the number of threads prevents the freezing of Libreoffice during the compile fase.

In my case i had make -j5 --> make -j3 solved the freezing problem.

Appearently Libreoffice blocks itself when using all threads.

Now i can compile without any problems.

Same issue with qtwebengine and qtwebkit.

mayby it is related to these 2 tools ?? Anyone who can investigate this ?

You are describing a build issue caused by too low resources/too high MAKEOPTS setup of your system, something entirely different from this thread.

Hey MadNoah,
after a lot of trial and error i managed to make it run by using the gtk legacy flag. That's ofc no solution but rather a workaround.
Make sure you start libreoffice from the console with the option --nologo at least for the first time.
Hope it helps for the time being.
