Hi folks - I'm stumped on this so am resorting to looking for help. I have an HP printer that I've set up ... seemingly correctly because i can print test pages. But when i try to print any actual content from an applicaiton (okular, chromium, whatever...), the printer shows up as offline for more than a week and I'm not able to print to it. As i mentioned though - i can print test pages from my linux box, and i can also print wirelessly to it from my smartphone. Any idea what would cause the applications to see the printer as offline even though its definitely online (and printing test pages from my linux box and real documents from my smartphone)?

thanks in advance!

What does the command 'lpstat -p' return?

Does the following command make a difference (or does its output show anything odd)?:

Code:
lpoptions -d ENVY_4520

Also, although the output of the 'lpstat -p' command looks fine, have you tried disabling the printer and re-enabling it?:

Code:
cupsdisable ENVY_4520
cupsenable ENVY_4520

EDIT: By the way, if you are using the CUPS browser interface http://localhost:631/ what are you entering for the user and password when prompted? I always enter 'root' and the root user's password when adding/modifying and configuring printers.

nothing odd with the -d switch:

Code:

(office:~/Downloads) rdswan% lpoptions -d ENVY_4520
copies=1 device-uri=hp:/net/ENVY_4520_series?ip=192.168.86.46 finishings=3 job-cancel-after=10800 job-hold-until=no-hold job-priority=50 job-sheets=none,none marker-change-time=0 number-up=1 printer-commands=none printer-info=ENVY_4520 printer-is-accepting-jobs=true printer-is-shared=true printer-is-temporary=false printer-location printer-make-and-model='HP Envy 4520 Series, hpcups 3.18.12' printer-state=3 printer-state-change-time=1548447019 printer-state-reasons=none printer-type=135196 printer-uri-supported=ipp://localhost/printers/ENVY_4520
(office:~/Downloads) rdswan%

and disabling/enabling didn't make any difference at all. no error messages, everything seemed find, but the printer still won't show up as a printer in applications.

Are you using net-print/hplip? It comes with hp-doctor CLI utility. Try running it.

If Jaglover's suggestion does not solve the problem, please post the output of the command 'lpinfo -v'.

hp-doctor hangs so i can't get it to do anything useful. when i run with the "-d" switch, i can see it just sits here:

I wonder about 'network socket://192.168.86.46:9100'. I have used CUPS on my laptop to configure several networked HP printers in various offices, and I don't use a device URI of the form that you are using ('device-uri=hp:/net/ENVY_4520_series?ip=192.168.86.46' according to the output you posted for 'lpoptions -d ENVY_4520'), so I wonder if that could be the source of your problem. For example, below is the configuration I use for a networked HP Colour Laserjet 5550 in one office:

Code:
Description: HP Color Laserjet 5550
   Location: Mezzanine office
Driver: HP Color LaserJet 5550 v3010.107 Postscript (recommended) (color)
 Connection: lpd://10.90.41.101/lp1
   Defaults: job-sheets=none, none media=iso_a4_210x297mm sides=one-sided

So you could try changing the printer URI from 'hp:/net/ENVY_4520_series?ip=192.168.86.46' to 'lpd://192.168.86.46/lp1' to see what happens.

Yes, same here, this is the line from my /etc/cups/printers.conf
Code:
DeviceURI hp:/net/HP_LaserJet_Pro_MFP_M127fn?ip=192.168.2.10

You can edit printers.conf by hand, but you need to stop cupsd beforehand.

I've got a minor improvement - i found an application (libreoffice) that i can print from. But okular and chromium still cant which makes it very painful for pdf docs or anything in gmail...
