PostPosted: Tue Jan 15, 2019 1:43 am    Post subject: Updated Qt, X won't start Reply with quote

I am running 4.15.0-43-generic on an amd64 system. I am running as close to standard gentoo as I can get.

I just updated Qt with all the pain that can be and emerge is clean. I rebooted my system and X won't start. I don't recall any recent updates so I am puzzled.

I see references to an error. I am puzzled that I don't recall any recent updates to X related stuff..

Specifically, fbevhw or /dev/fb0

Any idea how to fix it?

Here is my Xorg.0.log file:
Code:

My guess is that X actually did start, but stopped early because whatever is using the updated Qt didn't like it and died.
Any specific reason why you just updated Qt, what about the other packages that depend on Qt? How did you just update Qt?

What is starting X - are you using startx or is the display manager failing to start?

Are you using KDE? Unfortunately I'm not a KDE user so I'm of limited help here.

Can you be a bit more specific about how you start X, what's happening while doing that, what you see at the end of the process? Is there ever any attempt to switch to X or are you simply stuck at the terminal?

The first attempt to start X is when I boot up Gentoo. The login screen doesn't appear and I enter the root prompt . I'm not familiar with this code but I believe Qt isn't involved with this.

After this I have updated my system with "emerge --sync" and the rest of that chain.

The listing of Xorg.0.log that I posted came after a "startx" after those updates.

I just experimented with starting up again and I am getting somewhat different results.

nouveau is trying to load and failing.
fbdev is trying to load and failing.
vesa is trying to load and failing.
The GLX module is not loading.

I have no idea why I'm getting different results.

The tail end of the startx command gives an error message from xkbcomp that canberra-gtk-module failed to load. The screen is blank this time for several seconds, by the way.

there are also messages that twm, xterm, and xclock were not found. I think that is because these items are no longer in the standard X configuration on gentoo.

From the log you posted I'd conclude whatever is supposed to run on your Xorg server is not started and Xorg server has nothing to display as a result.

I poked around some more. What I can see is that nothing like xorg-server is running. I don't know why, given that it did not long ago. There was a new version of xorg-server not too long ago and I didn't see anything about a different configuration.

That also means that sddm does not start up

I am still pursuing this problem. The last few tries I decided to check dmesg as well as Xorg.0.log. The following error message is appearing in dmesg when I manually do a startx

Code:

297.933949] resource sanity check: requesting [mem 0x000c0000-0x000fffff], which spans more than PCI Bus 0000:00 [mem 0x000c0000-0x000dffff window]
[  297.934140] caller _nv001169rm+0xe3/0x1d0 [nvidia] mapping multiple BARs

It seems pretty clear why xorg-server is not starting. This is with x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-390.87. I tried an earlier version of nvidia-drivers, 340 something. It would not run. I tried a later version 415.something. It was masked.

I just don't know how to fix the problem.

Not having your exact hardware, google seems to imply those are warnings and not errors causing start failure.

My current theory, matching a few others, still stands because there's no other data available implying otherwise.

How about this as an experiment, this is NOT a fix:

create a ~/.xinitrc and add your favorite terminal emulator in it
~/.xinitrc wrote:
Code:
xterm

Do NOT add "&" to it, just that one terminal emulator. Then run startx .
Delete the .xinitrc after the test.

You are right. xterm did start!

I guess the next question is why sddm wouldn't start.

Can you provide sddm logs? Are you using systemd or openrc? Do you enable sddm service/unit?

Here is a section from /var/log/sddm.log that corresponds to the last run of sddm after I had done another emerge --newuse --deep --update --with-bdeps=y world,
and a revdep-rebuild.

By the way revdep-rebuild and revdep-rebuild.sh (the old version) produced different results. revdep-rebuild.sh forced rebuilding pyQt5.

It would have been helpful if they had identified what library had the problem. Any thoughts?

I am not sure, but have you tried to rebuild your desktop manager after updating Qt?

It's sddm, display manager, that seems to have issues.

I suspect the cop out support solution is to emerge --emptytree --oneshot sddm ... something in there was not updated properly...

I'm experiencing a similar issue which only appeared after I changed my configuration. I'm not sure if it was always this way under systemd or is the result of a change I made, but I couldn't hit alt f3 to get a new virtual terminal. To enable that I pre-started vts by starting the agetty serivce. Then I enabled the systemd-logind service. Now, SDDM coredumps when I try start the system and the X server crashes. Like the OP, I see this line in my Xorg.0.log file:
Quote:
[ 93.779] (II) systemd-logind: logind integration requires -keeptty and -keeptty was not provided, disabling logind integration

Some research turned up this commit message: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/48332/ .

The natural step would be to start the X server with the -keeptty setting, but I can't find where to set it on a systemd system. Does anyone know how to set -keeptty on the Xorg server for systemd systems?

Thanks for your help!

Doing that recompiled over 500 packages, but it worked! I was able to log in with the KDE environment, BUT KDE is badly broken. I had only 1 monitor and the control bar, but nothing else worked. Fortunately I had XFCE on my system and that is working fine. Any thoughts on how to do the same magic with KDE?

The first test is create a new user and log in with it in kde for see if the problem is some .config/* files are broken.

Creating a new user and logging in as that person had the following effects:

I had another "test user" that I tried to log in first that I have not used in months. I tried to log in as that user. I got the message."ksplashqml closed unexpectedly." At that point sddm was unresponsive. I couldn't get rid of the message and no other control would work. I had to give it the reboot button.

I then created a new test user and logged in. I got a message on trying to log in "ksplashqml closed unexpectedly." After a minute or so, the message disappered and I could log in and set up the environment. I started setting up my environment and logged out. The next time I tried to log in again, I got the "ksplashqml closed unexpectedly" message again. I couldn't get rid of the message and no other controls would work. I waited several menutes and hit the reboot button.

It certainly seems a setting could be involved but the setting is being interpreted differently from what it was and that is causing the problem. I suppose it also implies something is wrong with sddm because it is not dismissing the "ksplashqml message correctly.

Skinjob2707, you may want to post a different thread if you're using systemd. This thread is for OpenRC which likely is a different problem though you're welcome to try the suggestions posted (though ensure you have one of the systemd desktop environments profiles selected, it should clean up most of the dependencies for you).

Featherfoot, I'm surprised you tried emptytree, but it is the brute force way of ensuring everything is compiled correctly hence the "cop out." I'm hoping you didn't actually need to do it, and yes doing an emptytree on @world would pretty much enforce everything to be rebuilt and in sync with each other.

At least now we know all of sddm should be in sync, and sddm is working. The handoff is occurring to kde which should be handling ksplashqmi, which should deal with those dialog boxes.

You may want to try re-emerging the package that contains ksplashqmi

# emerge --oneshot $(equery belongs `which ksplashqmi`)

(or cut that apart and ensure it's doing what you think it's doing and not blindly running everything it may come back with :)) Caveat as I post many times: I do not run KDE so I don't know what I'm talking about with ksplashqmi ... someday I should at least set up a VM running KDE for the heck of it.

I think my KDE is more damaged than you want to consider. As I mentioned, the background and the associated icons are missing.

Nevertheless, I will try this.

Your command didn't work. I eventually rebuilt plasma-workspace, which contains ksplashqml.

It still fails as described. My original login now has kwin aborting.
