hwsetup and start-stop-deamon probs

The custom livecd I made has following errors in openrc (boot):
start-stop-deamon:usr/bin/xdm does not exist
hwsetup failed to start
cannot start gpm-pre as hwsetup would not start
So similar to https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1070550-highlight-hwsetup.html
I read that mentioned post, but saw no solution to the problem.
Mainly, I like to know what config files I need to change and how exactly to change them.
I don't have xdm installed but rather use slim as the display manager.
