|
|
I live in Salem, Oregon. I think it would be fun to have a local meeting group about Gentoo and/or Linux that meets at the Broadway Commons or some other centrally located place on an informal basis. I work from home as a software developer and I admit, I get lonely and miss the coffee/cooler conversations I enjoyed when working at my employer's headquarters.
If this interests you, please reply to this topic.
Perhaps I'm the only Gentoo enthusiast in Salem, Oregon (close, but not close enough to OSU Labs), or the only one who might enjoy a real live meeting? |

Ha! I'm also a Gentoo enthusiast that lives in Salem, Oregon, what are the chances of that!
Having said that, I am an "average Joe" Linux user; I don't write code or do IT or otherwise get paid to run Linux. My day job is in commercial printing as a prepress operator, so I mostly use macOS at work and home, and Linux is a hobby for me. I run Gentoo on my ThinkPad T61 and a rotating variety of other things on a Dell Optiplex 980 desktop (currently Manjaro, for ease of family usage).
I have been using Linux and BSD off and on since 1999. Started with buying a boxed book and CDs of Red Hat at a brick and mortar software store. Most of my time using Linux has been with Slackware, of which I am still a huge fan. I'm also very fond of OpenBSD.
Something about Gentoo has kept me returning to it frequently, and I admit that I mostly lurk here in the forums. My first three attempts at installing Gentoo were utter failures. Now I have a very simple Gentoo system with xfce running on the T61. My needs are few: web, mail, edit text files, listen to streaming music, etc. I like the very fine-grained control I have with Gentoo, in creating what I want out of an operating system (admittedly, a moving target). In that respect, Gentoo works for me, even more so than Slackware. Still trying to wrap my brain around a lot of Gentoo stuff, though. Always learning.
As far as meetups go, I would be more likely to do weekends. I'm an 8-to-5, M-F day-job guy, and my work is somewhat stressful, so at the end of the workday I just mostly like to go home, NOT use computers, and chill with the family. I like the Broadway Commons, and they have good coffee (Stumptown, ftw!). |

JWJones,
I'm on the wrong continent so I won't make your meet :(
I do need to comment on your Quote: | My first three attempts at installing Gentoo were utter failures | .
There are varying degrees of success in installing Gentoo but no failures.
You always learn something ... that's a degree of success. :) _________________ Regards,

Neddy, this is absolutely true. If I had just given up and never tried again, that would have been the failure. But I persisted, learned, and eventually succeeded. I still have a few details to work out, but I have a nice system that I can work with and build on. |

JWJones -
I sent you a private message and have not received a reply, I'm hoping by replying here, you might get notification I'm trying to reach you. It seems like we're the only 2 Gentoo people in Salem, OR. But, we're close to Corvalis and the OSU Labs! |
