|
|
Hi!
Today I've got a box with gentoo installed.
It has a Sandy Bridge Pentium G850 on board. I have a more powerful cpu: Ivy Bridge i3-3225, and I want to replace pentium with it.
The question is: have I to rebuild entire the system from scratch or is it enough to rebuild packages as they will be updated in portage tree? |

if the chip is compatible in your motherboard it should boot... as for making the change in gentoo, if you don't want to recompile everything now, i would at least do gcc, then @system. _________________

Everything will keep working just fine. Might want to compile AVX-compatible software since Ivy Bridge supports that and Sandy doesn't. |

Don't forget to adjust CFLAGS, CXXFLAGS and CPU_FLAGS_X86 in /etc/portage/make.conf. |

Do this: Code: | echo "*/* $(cpuid2cpuflags)" > /etc/portage/package.use/00cpuflags |

Thanks for replies, guys.
Seems mobo has an old BIOS which lacks of IvyBridge support, just refuses to start.
Will try to rewrite BIOS and try to boot again. |

I think ivybridge is mostly a die shrink, not many new instructions or changes so rebuilding everything might not even make a noticable difference. Anyway, upgrading to a newer cpu from the same manufacturer should not result in any problems. I went from a 2600 to a 6800k without problems |
