should I install gentoo in my laptop?

hi I am a newbie, I have a laptop dell core i7 4500U 1,8GHZ , 2 core 4 thread, is it slow with compile ?. Thanks and sorry if my english is not good

Generally, you'll be fine. Note that there are a few packages known to take a long time to compile, but they are not worth making a decision on.

For example, I use Firefox and prefer to compile www-client/firefox with jack support instead of using firefox-bin, but I didn't let that stop me from installing Gentoo on an 8-core i7.

Plus, you always get extra cool points for installing Gentoo.

I used to use it on waaay slower hardware.

As a side note, I find it amusing that there are 2c/4t 1.8GHz SKUs labeled as i7

I have Gentoo installed on my ThinkPad T61 (Core2 Duo) with 8GB RAM. Pretty basic setup, however, with fvwm, lightweight apps, Firefox, GIMP, etc. Runs fast and lean, about 80MB RAM idling on a fresh boot.

I had had Gentoo on my girlfriend's Core Duo/2GB laptop for years and it worked very well with Gentoo.

I installed and maintain Gentoo on 19 laptops. They all run Xfce Open Office, Firefox and Thunderbird.

The slowest of the laptop is a very old Toshiba with a single core Intel mobile processor and 512MB RAM and 120GB. This one takes a whole weekend to 'emerge -e @world'.

I have it installed on a 9 year old Dell M6500. Certain things take a bit like rust qtwebkit. Honestly the limiting factor for me is ram not processor as some c++ threads require 2G, so I ave to cut MAKEOPTS to -j4

Just installed on a laptop I bought in 2009: core i5 2.26, 8GB ram - no issues whatsoever with compilation speeds. Except qt packages. So, I have "-qt5 -qt4" as part of my USE_FLAGS.

Other than that, just use binaries for larger apps like firefox, chromium, or libreoffice.
