Is the corresponding vanilla kernel version for the current stage 3 tarball shown somewhere in the download or any other page? I have been looking for it, but I couldn't find it.

Just asking because I am about to wipe out my Windows and install Gentoo, and I rather prepare the kernel configuration part now from Windows (with https://menuconfig.org/mconf/vanilla/) where I can browse for things with time in case of doubts. Instead of configuring the kernel in the middle of the installation.

But, to use the proper menuconfig I need to know the specific vanilla kernel version. So, I am wondering if that's shown somewhere, or basically just which is the current version if I install right now the stage 3 tarball.

This is not a biggie, just in case anyone knows. If not, I will just assume the latest version 4.17.3 which should be pretty close, if not it. And in any case, I doubt these menus vary much from version to version. So, just in case anyone knows.

Thanks in advance.

Draenin I'm not sure what you're referring to. Stage 3 does not contain a kernel AFAIK since its a chroot? The gentoo sources packages gives you the latest stable version (unless you use experimental for USE flag). It appears for x86 and amd64 that 4.14.78 is the latest stable version right now.

Check the gentoo website for packages:

4.17.3 is not the latest anything. The v4.17.x line is abandoned now, but went up to v4.17.19 before it was abandoned for newer kernel series. I suggest looking at the kernel listing on https://lkml.org if you want to see which kernels are still supported upstream, and the latest versions of each supported series.
