|
|
I am having an issue with my desktop environment (X, drivers, or KDE... I'm not sure which). After logging in, my desktop freezes after a seemingly unpredictable amount of time (sometimes instantly, sometimes 5 minutes, sometimes hours later). Once it freezes, I can't do anything but perform a hard shutdown (can't even switch to a different tty). I can still ssh into this computer, however, leading me to believe it is purely a problem with the DE.
I'm on the 4.19.0 kernel, although this has been happening since at least the 4.15.0 kernel.
xorg-server-1.20.3
plasma-desktop-5.13.5-r3
graphics card is a Sapphire Radeon RX460, and I have the AMDGPU drivers built-in to the kernel.
kernel config: https://pastebin.com/rGQUUXKJ
The only error I can see is this, in my dmesg:
Code: | [65133.201676] [drm:amdgpu_job_timedout] *ERROR* ring gfx timeout, signaled seq=454, emitted seq=455
[65133.201679] [drm] GPU recovery disabled.
[66874.513644] [drm:amdgpu_job_timedout] *ERROR* ring sdma1 timeout, signaled seq=839, emitted seq=840
[66874.513646] [drm] GPU recovery disabled. |
I'm not sure if the time coincides with when my computer freezes, however. This time it happened after about 5 minutes, but dmesg shows this error after 18 hours.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I also had a Sapphire Radeon RX460.

You may also want to consider the temperature... and along the same lines, how much dust is in your system... Is it clean? Fans working? etc.?
Can you boot to something other than plasma and run glxspheres64 ok for a while? _________________ To look without without looking within is like looking without without looking at all. |

I was wrong in my original post... I had an XFX RX460 installed.
I replaced it with my Sapphire RX460 that I have lying around, and so far I've had no errors... it's been 24 hours so far. |

I have similar problems from the moment where I upgraded to x11-base/xorg-server-1.20.3 and nvidia-drivers-396.54. It was the same 'emerge -uND @world' operation, so I cannot distinguish.
The DE freezes on some energy saving event, on random basis, but always when I'm far from computer. When I come back, I can only see and move the mouse pointer.
But I can switch to a tty and restart the xdm service.
Regards,
