When I try to shutdown from a graphical session, 9 out of 10 times it does nothing for about a minute. Turns out it's "waiting for xdm" for a very long time.

How do I make it kill xdm/Xorg faster instead of waiting endlessly? rc_timeout_stopsec did not help.

How are you shutting down, and what sort of graphical session?

At a guess, your graphical session is waiting for all users (including you) to log off, so xdm, which spawned whatever session you're using, is hanging around waiting for it to end. I use KDE; issuing "Shutdown" from its "Leave" menu brings up a screen saying "Shutting down in 30 seconds" (running down to 0), but I can click on OK to get it immediately.

Usually the graphics session has some means to close the session and then shutdown, which stops the wait.

That's exactly what I'm doing.

The xdm service is starting the slim displaymanager, which in turn starts an Xfce4 session (startxfce4). To restart I use the logout menu entry, then the restart/shutdown button.

i get the same as Goverp myself (with mate)
i could just hit the button and cut the wait too, or just leave it going because i'm shutting down for real (instead of reboot) and don't care then if it need that minute or not to stop.

i don't think it has to do with openrc, for me the counter is done by mate and when the counter end, the real shutdown is run ; so you may more find out howto speed up xfce shutdown
