|
|
I've dowloaded the latest minimal install CD iso (install-amd64-minimal-20181021T214502Z.iso) and wrote it to the USB drive. After reboot when GRUB menu appeared, I selected the default "Boot LiveCD (kernel: gentoo)". After that booting process hangs with a black screen and a frozen (non-blinking) cursor in the upper left corner.
Then I tried the following options, the behavior was not changed from the above:
1. Choose "Boot LiveCD (kernel: gentoo) (cached)".
2. Edit GRUB command line. Added all of the following kernel options:
noapic
nodetect
nodhcp
nodmraid
nofirewire
nogpm
nohotplug
nokeymap
nolapic
nosata
nosmp
nosound
nousb
nox
nonfs
scandelay
3. Convert the given iso with "isohybrid -u" command.
This is on a brand new HP Elitebook 840 G5 laptop. Note that this liveCD loads well on old HP ProBook 640.
I also tried to load from old RescueCD (from another USB drive). After GRUB booting process also hangs, but the result is more problematic: I cannot boot the laptop anymore until its battery is completely discharged. Again, everything is good on old HP ProBook 840.
I believe some driver may hang when loading, but do not know how to detect it.
Please, advise how to proceed.

Did you try gentoo-nofb? I could imagine that Radeon hangs when trying to load the driver. |

In GRUB menu there is no option to load gentoo-nofb. There are only 2 choises:
1. Boot LiveCD (kernel: gentoo)
2. Boot LiveCD (kernel: gentoo) (cached)
Both of them have the following commands:
Code: | linux /isolinux/gentoo root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc dokeymap looptype=squashfs loop=/image.squashfs cdroot
initrd /isolinux/gentoo.igz
|
For the cached GRUB option the 1st command also has "docache" argument.
I tried to edit both of the commands and to change /isolinux/gentoo to /isolinux/gentoo-nofb as well as /isolinux/gentoo.igz to /isolinux/gentoo-nofb.igz. It resulted in the following errors:
Code: |
error: file /isolinux/gentoo-nofb not found
|
and
Code: |
error: file /isolinux/gentoo-nofb.igz not found
|
How to disable framebuffer for the LiveCD? |

By the way, the video card is no radeon, it is Intel UHD Graphics 620.
What is its appropriate kernel module? Is it i915? |

After disabling graphics on boot in BIOS menu now it is possible to start LiveCD. |

Try with latest SystemRescueCd.

Disabling 'Hybrid Graphics' and enabling only 'Dedicated Graphics' worked for me too, thanks.
FWIW I have a Thinkpad P1 Gen 2 with Intel + Nvidia graphics |
