I cannot help but notice that software patents are becoming increasingly irrelevant. The Alliance for Open Media was the first big thing I noticed. Now, Microsoft has joined the Open Invention Network.

Don't be surprised if you guys see "exFAT" show up as an option in your next vanilla kernel config.

not exactly. a lot of software patents were literally just "take old business model, now do it on a computer or network of computers." in both the US and EU, it generally requires more now than just "add a general purpose computer" to get a patent. doesn't mean they still don't get issued...

in addition to updates to the law, we're hitting the period where the era of patents covering that kind of bullshit are now expiring.

Microsoft is terrified of Oracle and Apple right now. They're trying to save themselves from drowning by clinging to the side of our boat. Kick them off.

With, dare I say, extreme prejudice?

I appreciate Microsoft's cooperation with Docker. Particularly when it comes to working to trim down their behemoth Core images.

Absolutely. We need to send a clear message to people who'd ever think of working for a company with a reputation this far in the shitter.

Man, you guys all want to burn Microsoft for the entirely wrong set of reasons.

It's not what they're doing with Linux that's the problem, it's what they're doing with Windows.

Seems like they're doing the right thing with Windows, driving people away.

I'm more worried about what the Windows people at systemd are doing to linux.

Windows 10 is a pretty good demo/advertisement for MS Office. You can design an entire GUI operating system using only Powerpoint, and only lose 20% of your userbase when paying customers are coerced into using it!

don't give a crap what they do with windows. Its theirs to completely ruin if they so wish. I care about their stance towards Linux is and if you think for a moment that just because they are publicly playing nice with Linux at the moment that they either are still not being assholes or still have the potential to be assholes well I hope you have sugarfree koolaid otherwise you will get early onset diabetes

They have ruined companies just because. Look what they did to nokia (thank god nokia had legally two entities so one still survived)
