I recently bought a new Headset with a microphone. It has two plugs- one for sound out and another for microphone port. Sound works fine, but the microphone doesn't work. Built in mic works well exept when the microphone is plugged in then it stops working. (sidenote at bottom)
When I look in pavucontrol and when I listen to test recordings it is all just plain noise. Even using the hardware mute on the microphone doesn't interrupt the recording.
I have looked in pavucontrol, but everything is fine. Alsamixer - everything is fine. I even tried using hdajackretask from media-sound/alsa-utils to see if the port was not detected, but everything was normal and as it should be.
I have tried setting "option sound-hda-intel model=..." to laptop, res(i think) and asus-mode5(from a guy with same soundchip) and auto(through hdajackretask). I also tried "options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 enable=yes", but to no avail.

Sidenote:
Plugging the microphone in causes the laptops built in mic to stop working, but this is typical according to a guy I talked with on discord.

Thank you for responding!
I dual boot windows and gentoo, and the mic works perfectly in windows.
Sorry, I forgot to write that in my post 
EDIT: I also tried in an ubuntu 18.04.1 liveCD, exactly the same problem.
EDIT2: It appears in pavucontrol that the right part of the microphone produces more noise than the left, but this is most likely unrelated to my issue.
EDIT3: Upping the "Mic" volume level in alsamixer greatly increases the sound of the noise, even if it is still muted. |

| I had the same issue, but my mic didn't worked on windows, only in Ubuntu |

I have been looking into this problem for some time now because it has been really annoying.
It seems like (for my problem) it is a kernel driver issue. It is way above my head and looking around online this affects a great deal of people with the same laptop (ASUS ROG G751), but no solution has been found. |

This problem has been solved thanks to some amazing people on the alsa-devel mailing list!! I really appreciate it!
The patch will most likely make it into the 4.20 kernel. |
