Hi, I recently installed gentoo for the 64-bit x86 arch with KDE plasma and OpenRC. I'm having a hard time getting my wifi to work. The computer is a lenovo y50-70 and the wifi card is an intel 3160.
I'm pretty sure i've enabled the right configurations for my kernel, but I'm not sure if I've recompiled it right. All I have to do is "make menuconfig", "make && make modules_install","make install" and then "reboot" from cd /usr/src/linux right?
So far, i've downloaded the tar from https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/users/drivers/iwlwifi#firmware, extracted the ucode, copied it to the firmware folder, set a settin the the kernel config get as an external blob, rebooted, and emerge'd sys-kernel/linux-firmware. but when I run "emerge --ask sys-firmware/iwl3160-ucode", I get:
Code:
* IMPORTANT: config file '/etc/portage/package.use/zz-autounmask' needs updating.
* See the CONFIGURATION FILES and CONFIGURATION FILES UPDATE TOOLS
* sections of the emerge man page to learn how to update config files.
Calculating dependencies... done!

(sys-kernel/linux-firmware-20181001:0/0::gentoo, installed) pulled in by sys-kernel/linux-firmware required by @selected
(sys-firmware/iwl3160-ucode-0.16.242414:16/16::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) pulled in by sys-firmware/iwl3160-ucode

I suppose the package is blocked because the drivers have already been installed. But I don't think it's installed. For one thing, it doesn't show up in ifconfig. Secondly, nothing comes up when I run the wpa supplicant GUI in kde. Lastly, when I used KDE in debian there was like a wifi manager in the taskbar that isn't there now even though i've installed KDE NetworkManager.
Any advice would be appreciated :D

pineappleHelmet ... note that sys-kernel/linux-firmware has USE="-savedconfig" set:

equery -NC u sys-kernel/linux-firmware | grep saveconfig:
+ - savedconfig : Allows individual selection of firmware files

That "+" shows that this is the default ... and the ebuild has the following:

sys-firmware/iwl3160-ucode-0.16.242414.ebuild:
RDEPEND="[...]
!sys-kernel/linux-firmware[-savedconfig]

This states that USE="-savedconfig' on sys-kernel/linux-firmware will block sys-firmware/iwl3160-ucode ... and that is what you're seeing above.

best ... khay
