It's a couple days past my birthday, but....
It's been a while since I got everything Gentoo to gel. But, I don't think that this has ever happened to me before:
Code:

emerge -pv --depclean

 * Always study the list of packages to be cleaned for any obvious
 * mistakes. Packages that are part of the world set will always
 * be kept.  They can be manually added to this set with
 * `emerge --noreplace <atom>`.  Packages that are listed in
 * package.provided (see portage(5)) will be removed by
 * depclean, even if they are part of the world set.
 *
 * As a safety measure, depclean will not remove any packages
 * unless *all* required dependencies have been resolved.  As a
 * consequence of this, it often becomes necessary to run
 * `emerge --update --newuse --deep @world` prior to depclean.

>>> No packages selected for removal by depclean
Packages installed:   841
Packages in world:    63
Packages in system:   43
Required packages:    841
Number to remove:     0

Code:

gentoo-dell ~ # emerge -pvuDU --newuse --with-bdeps=y @world --exclude gentoo-sources

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

Total: 0 packages, Size of downloads: 0 KiB

 * IMPORTANT: 9 news items need reading for repository 'gentoo'.
 * Use eselect news read to view new items.

Code:

gentoo-dell ~ # emerge @preserved-rebuild

 * IMPORTANT: 9 news items need reading for repository 'gentoo'.
 * Use eselect news read to view new items.

Calculating dependencies... done!
>>> Auto-cleaning packages...

>>> No outdated packages were found on your system.

BEST birthday present I've had in a while.

[sigh] I guess I'm a geek

Birthdays are a one-way trip. Not sure if you were wanting to try it again...

Seems like it worked out well. Happy Birthday?

Moved from Portage & Programming to Gentoo Chat.

Since this doesn't seem to be a support request, it fits better here.

Merry belated birthday happy!
