Hi all,

I have a setup that I believe should work, it actually works on Ubuntu workstation at my work - but it doesn't on my home Gentoo system, so I suppose there is some difference, that I don't understand. Hopefully someone here will know what is wrong on my home pc ;)

The configuration:

1. terminus-font installed

Code:
tuvok@vetar ~ $ eix terminus
[I] media-fonts/terminus-font
     Available versions:  4.46 {X a-like-o +center-tilde distinct-l +pcf +pcf-unicode-only +psf quote ru-dv +ru-g ru-i ru-k}
     Installed versions:  4.46(12:43:48 14.08.2018)(X center-tilde pcf pcf-unicode-only psf ru-g -a-like-o -distinct-l -quote -ru-dv -ru-i -ru-k)
     Homepage:            http://terminus-font.sourceforge.net/
     Description:         A clean fixed font for the console and X11

2. Enabled with eselect:

Code:
tuvok@vetar ~ $ eselect fontconfig list
Available fontconfig .conf files (* is enabled):
  [1]   09-texlive.conf
  [2]   10-autohint.conf
[...]
  [65]  69-unifont.conf *
  [66]  70-no-bitmaps.conf
  [67]  70-yes-bitmaps.conf *
  [68]  75-yes-terminus.conf *
  [69]  80-delicious.conf *
[...]

3. Starting xterm: (for testing)

Code:
tuvok@vetar ~ $ xterm -fa 'Terminus'

Terminal starts, so how do I know it didn't load the right font?

1. I have side by side Terminology open, with Terminus font and it looks way different (on the Ubuntu at work they look exactly the same)
2. This:

Code:
tuvok@vetar ~ $ ps ax | grep xterm
 3794 ?        SNs    0:00 xterm
20190 ?        SNs    0:00 xterm -class UXTerm -title uxterm -u8

Seems that for some reason it loaded Liberation Mono font.

The .Xdefaults file looks like this:
Code:
Xcursor.theme: gentoo-silver
Xcursor.size: 22

So nothing about xterm here. The .Xresources looks like this:
Code:
!xterm*formatOtherKeys: 1
xterm*modifyOtherKeys: 1

#include "/home/tuvok/virtual_home_public/config/Xresources"

And the included file is exactly the same as on the Ubuntu workstation, available in full here:
https://github.com/tuvok/config/blob/master/config/Xresources

Is there some yet another file in which this may be configured? Or is there some other issue here? Any ideas?

Unless you've set an alias, I doubt "xterm -fa 'Terminus' " would work.

Typical font names are something like "-xos4-terminus-medium-r-normal--24-240-72-72-c-120-iso8859-1"
which you could alias to "Terminus"

I'm setting mine in ~/.Xdefaults
Code:
xterm*foreground: white
xterm*background: black
xterm*font: -xos4-terminus-medium-r-normal--14-140-72-72-c-80-iso10646-1
xterm*geometry: 110x45

Install x11-apps/xlsfonts and use it to see a list of the X11 fonts available in your installation.

Code:
$ xlsfonts

I'm not sure as -fa takes faceName pattern, not font name - there are other options for that, but anyway - the main configuration is in the linked file, which basically sets:

Code:
xterm*faceName: Terminus:style=Bold
xterm*faceSize: 14

and this works on the other workstation.

Another interesting thing is the output of xterm -report-fonts. First it says that Terminus is loaded, but few lines under that it reports it as Liberation Mono-14:

You're right about the facename, I've never used it as I quit using xterm a long time ago.

There seem to be some peculiarities when doing include files and how you tell xrdb to parse them.

"man xrdb" look for include directories

Edit to add: what does the .xinitrc file look like on the system where it works?

I'm not sure how long this image will be available, but here's how it looks:

The windows are:
1. xfontsel with terminus selected, looks the way it should
2. Terminology with terminus font, looks the way it should
3. xterm with terminus configured as xterm*font (as seen in window 2)
4. xterm with terminus configured as xterm*fontFace (as seen in window 2, line commented out)

I don't know what fonts are on 3. and 4., but that's not terminus

File seems to be included correctly, changing it has effects.. just not ones I would expect ;)

As for .xinitrc, I will not be able to check that now as I'm on holidays, but it's bare Ubuntu installation, and my Ubuntu 16.04 VM I have here doesn't have that file at all. I'll try to set up xterm in the VM and see how it looks there.

EDIT: I checked with the Ubuntu 16 VM, all I need to set up is xterm*faceName and xterm*faceSize, and everything shows up as expected there.

Quite likely xrdb is being executed by something in your vm, that isn't being executed in the main system.
That's why I asked about the .xinitrc which is where xrdb is typically executed when the system starts.
I don't use Ubuntu but it's possible that when the .Xresources file is edited and saved, it triggers off xrdb, probably a script.

what does "xrdb -query -all" show, as far as the terminus fonts? (the vm as well as the main system).

Edit to add: and what version of the terminus fonts are being used (vm and main system)

Edit to add2: does terminus fonts show up in /var/log/Xorg.0.log file?
Like this:
Code:
[ 85624.490] (**) FontPath set to:
    /usr/share/fonts/misc,
    /usr/share/fonts/TTF,
    /usr/share/fonts/Type1,

Sorry, I wasn't clear on this - I run xrdb manually after editing the file, both Ubuntu VM and Gentoo.

On main system it's exactly what in the configuration files:
Code:

On Gentoo it's 4.46, on VM 4.39-1

No, but I didn't restart X since installing it (in VM it found the font without restarting after install).
Code:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep fonts

Peculiar!

I'm not sure where else to look.

But I'm going to chalk it up to something going on with terminus >4.40 as I've blocked it at that for some reason.

Edit to add: could be some differences between the way the fonts are configured. *shrugs*
Not sure where the default fonts.conf file is on ubuntu.

Chris.B.,

Do you have 'built-ins' in the path as returned by the 'xset q' command?:

Code:
$ eselect fontconfig list | grep terminus
  [45]  75-yes-terminus.conf *
$ xset q | grep -A1 Font
Font Path:
  /usr/share/fonts/misc/,built-ins

EDIT: Even if I add the terminus font directory path in Gentoo, I can't get the Terminus font in XTerm.

Code:
$ xset fp+ /usr/share/fonts/terminus
$ xset fp rehash
$ xset q | grep -A1 Font
Font Path:
  /usr/share/fonts/misc/,built-ins,/usr/share/fonts/terminus

Code:
$ ls /usr/share/fonts/terminus/
encodings.dir  ter-x12b.pcf.gz  ter-x14n.pcf.gz  ter-x18b.pcf.gz  ter-x20n.pcf.gz  ter-x24b.pcf.gz  ter-x28n.pcf.gz
fonts.dir      ter-x12n.pcf.gz  ter-x16b.pcf.gz  ter-x18n.pcf.gz  ter-x22b.pcf.gz  ter-x24n.pcf.gz  ter-x32b.pcf.gz
fonts.scale    ter-x14b.pcf.gz  ter-x16n.pcf.gz  ter-x20b.pcf.gz  ter-x22n.pcf.gz  ter-x28b.pcf.gz  ter-x32n.pcf.gz

EDIT2: Could this be the reason?:

Well, that's the way it looks:

I don't think so, console is what you have when you don't run X... but then I'm not a specialist on X or fonts, so who knows ;)

Unfortunately older terminus is no longer in the repo so I can't test if that would work. Ubuntu repositories stopped on version 4.40 (both Ubuntu 17 and 18 have that) - so it might be related to some changes that happened between those versions. ( The pc at work that I mentioned in previous posts has Ubuntu 17 ).

older ebuilds are in the attic https://sources.gentoo.org/cgi-bin/viewvc.cgi/gentoo-x86/media-fonts/terminus-font/

I believe the files can be downloaded from sourceforge https://sourceforge.net/projects/terminus-font/files/

Code:
xset q | grep -A1 Font
Font Path:
  /usr/share/fonts/misc,/usr/share/fonts/TTF,/usr/share/fonts/Type1,/usr/share/fonts/100dpi,/usr/share/fonts/75dpi,/usr/share/fonts/Speedo,/usr/share/fonts/util,/usr/share/fonts/encodings,/usr/share/fonts/dejavu,/usr/share/fonts/corefonts,/usr/share/fonts/terminus,/usr/share/fonts/urw-fonts,/usr/share/fonts/unifont,/usr/share/fonts/misc/,/usr/share/fonts/TTF/,/usr/share/fonts/Type1/,/usr/share/fonts/100dpi/,/usr/share/fonts/75dpi/,built-ins

I don't have terminus selected in eselect fontconfig but I do have them listed in my xorg.conf file. *shrugs*

Edit to add: I tried with droid that I have loaded on my system, they aren't in xorg.conf nor in fontconfig, but I could call them from the command line (urxvt) with the fn command, and gtk knows about them.

You might try pulling an old ebuild, put it in your local directory, download the tar.gz file and put it in /usr/portage/distfiles, block anything greater than the old ebuild version and see if it will work.

Edit to add2: what does "fc-list|grep terminus" return

It was similar for the 4.46, maybe exactly the same - I didn't save the results unfortunately.

Anyway, this has to be something different than version if the 4.39-r1 still fails here.

EDIT: I checked with 4.36, just to make sure, and that didn't help either.

Also, now that I restarted my system, I re-cecked Xorg.0.log - there is no mention of terminus there.

All you can do at this point is to dig into any and all configurations that are different between the system that works and gentoo (that doesn't)
that would include any local font configuration files, fontconfig files, etc as well as the system wide ones.

As to what all the different config files are, they're usually mentioned in places like man pages.

I know that some files go in ~/.config/<some sub dir> and others use ~/.font* directories, so keep that in mind.

Edit to add: on the system that works what does "fc-list|grep terminus" show.

check the locale differences between the working system and gentoo also

What use flags do you have enabled?

Currently on 4.36 I have only "X pcf psf ru-g"

X pcf psf and the center-tilde, but that one shouldn't make a difference, nor in your case should the ru-g ones matter.

my files show ter-x* and ter-1* but I think that's based on locale as mine's set to utf8.

This is strange. It installs a lot of /usr/share/consolefonts files but only a handful of /usr/share/fonts/terminus:

Code:

Now with 4.39-r1 again, and use flags "X center-tilde pcf pcf-unicode-only psf ru-g"
Not sure where this ru-g comes from as I don't particularly care about russian characters. Locale is set to pl_PL.utf8

Peculiar, not sure why so few /usr/share/fonts/terminus, as I've got 234 fonts which I think is all fonts available for all languages,
as they are ter-x, ter-1, ter-2, ter-u, ter-p, etc

I just looked at my emerge history for terminus-font, I've tried, 4.39-r1 that lasted less than a day, the same for 4.40 and 4.46.

I'm beginning to think your problem has to do with locale somehow.

Code:
cat /etc/locale.gen
# /etc/locale.gen: list all of the locales you want to have on your system
#
# The format of each line:
# <locale> <charmap>
#
# Where <locale> is a locale located in /usr/share/i18n/locales/ and
# where <charmap> is a charmap located in /usr/share/i18n/charmaps/.
#
# All blank lines and lines starting with # are ignored.
#
# For the default list of supported combinations, see the file:
# /usr/share/i18n/SUPPORTED
#
# Whenever glibc is emerged, the locales listed here will be automatically
# rebuilt for you.  After updating this file, you can simply run `locale-gen`
# yourself instead of re-emerging glibc.

en_US ISO-8859-1
en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8
en_GB ISO-8859-1
en_GB.UTF-8 UTF-8

Code:
locale
LANG=en_US.utf8
LC_CTYPE="en_US.utf8"
LC_NUMERIC="en_US.utf8"
LC_TIME="en_US.utf8"
LC_COLLATE=C
LC_MONETARY="en_US.utf8"
LC_MESSAGES="en_US.utf8"
LC_PAPER="en_US.utf8"
LC_NAME="en_US.utf8"
LC_ADDRESS="en_US.utf8"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.utf8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_US.utf8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.utf8"
LC_ALL=

check both system and see what the differences are between them (at least as a starting point)

The locale.gen is the same on both systems, but locale differ a bit:

Gentoo:
Code:
vetar ~ # cat /etc/locale.gen | grep -v '#'
en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8
pl_PL.UTF-8 UTF-8
vetar ~ # locale
LANG=pl_PL.utf8
LC_CTYPE="pl_PL.utf8"
LC_NUMERIC="pl_PL.utf8"
LC_TIME="pl_PL.utf8"
LC_COLLATE="pl_PL.utf8"
LC_MONETARY="pl_PL.utf8"
LC_MESSAGES="pl_PL.utf8"
LC_PAPER="pl_PL.utf8"
LC_NAME="pl_PL.utf8"
LC_ADDRESS="pl_PL.utf8"
LC_TELEPHONE="pl_PL.utf8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="pl_PL.utf8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="pl_PL.utf8"
LC_ALL=

Ubuntu:
Code:
tuvok@tuvok-VirtualBox:~$ locale
LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LANGUAGE=en_US
LC_CTYPE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC=pl_PL.UTF-8
LC_TIME=pl_PL.UTF-8
LC_COLLATE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY=pl_PL.UTF-8
LC_MESSAGES="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER=pl_PL.UTF-8
LC_NAME=pl_PL.UTF-8
LC_ADDRESS=pl_PL.UTF-8
LC_TELEPHONE=pl_PL.UTF-8
LC_MEASUREMENT=pl_PL.UTF-8
LC_IDENTIFICATION=pl_PL.UTF-8
LC_ALL=

Could re-emerging with locale set that way change anything?

as they are ter-x, ter-1, ter-2, ter-u, ter-p, etc

I reemerged it with flag pcf-unicode-only turned off, which produced 237 entries in /usr/share/fonts/terminus, but fc-list | grep -i terminus lists only 36 entries. Also it still doesn't display right.

Just emerged xterm to see what's going on and ran
Code:
xterm -report-fonts
Loaded XftFonts(Terminus:style=Bold[normal])
      first char:    32
      last char:     120154
      missing-chars: 116866
      present-chars: 3257
   DejaVu Sans Mono-14
...

In my case I've set up DejaVu as my default fonts, but it reports similar to what you showed on an earlier post.

That's weird, if I use misc 10x20 fonts they behave the way they should, something going on with Terminus fonts, but not sure what.

Edit to add: I'm going to play around with various fonts and see what happens.

I checked to see how it looks on the Ubuntu VM, and it seems correct there:
Code:
tuvok@tuvok-VirtualBox:~$ xterm -report-fonts
Loaded XftFonts(Terminus:style=Bold[normal])
                first char:    0
                last char:     255
                missing-chars: 37
                present-chars: 219
        Terminus-14
        style=Bold
        slant=0

Looks like part of it is because of "eselect fontconfig" and what's selected as well as your local fonconfig file (if any)

I just removed a lot of stuff from eselect fontconfig as a test and it started using some really weird fonts

You'll have to play around with what's selected and go from there.
