My system running with x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-396.51 wants to update mesa to media-libs/mesa-18.2.0_rc2 but fails with the following error:
Code:
meson.build:401:4: ERROR:  Problem encountered: VDPAU state tracker requires at least one of the following gallium drivers: r300, r600, radeonsi, nouveau.

but I don't use any of the gallium drivers. I sort of know that nvidia does it's own thing with mesa, do I even need the package in the first place?

Correct, you do not need MESA. It may be pulled in as a build time dependency for some other packages, but it is not used. BTW, there is a bug opened for this issue.

For nvidia-drivers is no mesa testing RC special version required.
Code:
echo "=media-libs/mesa-18.2.0_rc* -~amd64" >> /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords
should help :)

Josef.95, media-libs/mesa-18.2.0_rc2 also fails with this error. Is there some USE flag I need to set? Or should I just wait for a workaround on the bug report?

Methinks it starts here. And then a number of duplicate bugs.
