gimp is saving thumbnails to jpg. makes a 5kb photo 20kb big

I tried to change my avatar lately. Resized the picture to 80x80 and saved as jpeg with 90% quality. The outcome was a 20Kb picture despite the fact that gimp told me it would be 5Kb small.
After long troubleshootuing i noticed when turning off "save thumbnail" the picture really got to 5Kb.

is something wrong with gimp 2.10 with the new mushroom picture as welcome message? previously with gimp i always got the 5kb image of the size 80x80p. Is there some new setting in place? I tried to contact gimp via icq but it failed yesterday.
