It appears to be the result inheriting the linux-info eclass and is the way to centralize all kernel version dependencies - so it's easier to get a list of packages that need to be rebuilt (mostly either ebuilds that installs modules, or software that depends on specific kernel modules directly) if a kernel change happens...
I'm really terrible at this, I tend to only rebuild after it breaks... _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD

papu ... that would be because it's a USE_EXPAND, the actual (expanded) useflag is 'kernel_linux' (or 'kernel_FreeBSD' if KERNEL="FreeBSD"):
Code: | % eix --only-names --exact --installed-with-use kernel_linux
app-arch/libarchive
app-misc/tmux
dev-libs/glib
net-misc/dhcpcd
net-misc/openssh
net-wireless/aircrack-ng
net-wireless/wpa_supplicant

sys-apps/debianutils
sys-apps/gptfdisk
sys-apps/openrc
sys-fs/fuse
sys-process/htop
virtual/service-manager
