I vote for Heartbreak Ridge. Any film with Mario Van Peebles and Clint Eastwood is truly awesome

Heartbreak Ridge was funny. I wouldn't really consider it a "war movie."

I liked Patton, although the tanks in that movie were not accurate in any way. So I turn to Tora, Tora, Tora. Very accurate. I always get chills when I watch the scene where the Japanese are launching the first wave off the carriers. But in some ways the movie feels like a documentary. The Longest Day has to be one of the most complex and expensive movies in it's day. Like Tora, it used multiple directors, representing the different sides of the battle. There is one scene in The Longest Day that is amazing to watch. It is a moving aerial shot that lasts almost three minutes uncut. French forces are moving against a casino held by the Germans and the movement and action; bombs exploding, machine gun fire effects.... all had to be coordinated for that one shot. Great war movie, but not my favorite. Saving Private Ryan is without a doubt on a lot of peoples favorite list, and for good reason. I was glad to see a new generation learn a little about the war their grandfathers fought.

My all time favorite war movie is a toss up between The Sands of Iwo Jima and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. John Wayne and John Agar in each. Entertaining. I don't worry about historical inaccuracies. There's a love interest in both.

Now the best war story on "film" has to be the Band of Brothers mini series.

Also rans: Letters From Iwo Jima. They Were Expendable.

I quite liked Tora! Tora! Tora!

Although I watched it over 10 years ago.

More recently I thought Kong: Skull Island captured the war quite accurately.

Fury. Doesn't try to be grandiose, just the dark grit and brutality of war.

Since Heartbreak Ridge isn't really a war film, I'm going to interpret that to mean the term war is being used broadly.

Non-traditional: Nightbreaker

Inspirational: The Patriot

Traditional: Windtalkers

The Dambusters
The Deer Hunter
Flash Gordon :P

Fun fact: The trench scene in Star Wars is based on the Dam Busters

Well where to begin...

Empire of the Sun
Dirty Dozen
Bridge on the river Kwai
Where Eagles Dare
A bridge too far
St Nazaire Raid
The Heroes of Telemark
Enemy at the Gates
Tora! Tora! Tora!
Kelly's Heroes
Catch22 (only because I <3 the book and the directors attempt to capture the madness is funny)

if ANYONE dares suggest U-571... you are dead to me

doesn't ring a bell. I used to watch tonnes of war films as a kid so the names never stuck unless I came across them again.
Take "a bridge too far" it wasn't until I played BF1942 and MarketGuarden campaign that I was like "those bridges, I swear I remember them" then "A bridge too far came on and it struck me that one is odd, it had load of big name holiwood stars (of the time)

Oooooh, I forgot A Bridge Too Far. That one is excellent. Bridge over the River Kwai is not only one of the best war films but one of the best films of all time.

You'll know the theme from 633 Squadron, I promise: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWXQUhBsUVM

ill listen when I get yt access (werk :( ).
St Nazaire Raid is great especially as the anniversary was quite recently. Right at the end when the British ram the dock and they are captured by the Germans, the German officer is berating the foolishness of the raid AND then the ship explodes and the officer is gobsmacked as the true plan has been realized & he just salutes the British.

There are a load of submarine films as well but I cannot remember them and a couple of African campaign films ( Montgomery stuff). There was one where there is a long mind field and the brits come up with an audacious plan to clear a path in one night to strike the german column

Bridge On the River Kwai was an affront to every soldier who ever lived. It was also a thinly veiled disparagement of British culture. If you think it was a good war movie, or it made you proud to be British, the joke's on you.
