As others have already stated, noone really uses the original vi anymore - they use a vi clone. I think it's very important that gentoo find a way to incorporate some form of vi clone into the base install. The reason being, vi is THE STANDARD UNIX text editor. I understand that linux is not exactly unix and that emacs is a good text editor too. But vi is standard. You go to almost any unix system in the world (except gentoo) and you'll find a vi clone as part of the default install. Unfortuantely emacs is GNU, so it is not as standard as vi (this is not to imply it's not as much or more capable), additionally, it tends to be on the bloated side. The developers at gentoo ought to take a look at nex/nvi which is a vi clone used by some of the BSD's. It'll do the job in a small footprint.
